“We better get back to our group. Nice to meet you,” I say as I start to edge away.
Jake’s laughing about the encounter as we head back to the table of my teammates. There are about ten of the guys here, along with their girlfriends.
Jason, my closest friend on the team, glances up as we approach and sees Jake laughing.
“What’s so funny?” Jason’s always the guy who wants in on any joke.
“Logan’s just discovered that having a boyfriend is the ultimate chick-repelling magnet,” Jake says.
“I knew you’d come in handy sometime,” I say.
He rolls his eyes. “I’m glad I’m useful.”
“I find you come in useful in other ways occasionally.” I wink at him. Jake just blinks back at me, and I can see the disbelief on his face as he comes to grips with the fact I’ve just flirted with him in front of my teammates.
I guess it definitely is a new milestone.
He recovers from his surprise to flash me a grin as we sit back down.
“So, how did you guys meet?” Ava, Jason’s girlfriend, leans forward across the table to ask us.
I slide Jake a smile. “We went to high school together. Jake tutored me for chemistry.”
“Did you use those molecular model kits where you play with the sticks and balls?” Jason asks.
It takes me a moment to get Jason’s joke, but when I do, I scrunch up my napkin and throw it at him. Everyone else quickly joins in, and we all pelt Jason with crumpled napkins. Even Jake.
I catch Jake’s eyes in the midst of the chaos, and he’s laughing hard, his dark eyes sparkling with amusement. It makes me laugh even harder.
It’s funny because I used to pray to God for a miracle.
But now, sitting here, my body somehow managing to contain the overwhelming love and happiness swelling inside me?
This feels pretty close to miraculous to me.
