“Yes. And in a few weeks this business with Felix will be filed away under the category of stupid stuff too.”
Seren sighed heavily. “I hope you’re right.”
CHAPTERTHIRTY-THREE
The wet weather continued into Monday, along with grey skies and low hanging fog. The dreariness of it perfectly reflected Seren’s mood.
With the weather so bad, Kit wouldn’t be taking the train out, which meant she had no chance of bumping into him on her way to work. After speaking to Mirren she’d decided to give him some space. Not too much though; her nerves couldn’t take it. She’d go over to his place after she’d finished her shift and hope he was willing to talk.
A few tourists braved the elements at lunchtime, propping their umbrellas by the door and leaving wet footprints all over the floor. Things quietened down again after lunch, and she sighed when Felix walked through the door.
“I’ve been trying to call you,” he said, standing at the end of the bar. He didn’t bother to take his rain-soaked jacket off, so she was hopeful that he wasn’t planning on hanging around.
“I’ve been ignoring you,” she said bluntly.
“I only wanted to check you were okay after Friday night.”
“I’m fine.”
“Glad to hear it.” He straightened up, fingering his car keys in his hand. “Kit Treneary was pretty upset when he heard what had happened.”
“Was he?” she said without inflection.
“Yeah. He was.” After taking a couple of steps towards the door, he turned back. “I got the wrong brother, didn’t I?”
Seren’s heart rate picked up and she shifted her weight. “How do you mean?”
“I thought you were upset about Noah having a girlfriend, but it was Kit.”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Sure you don’t.” His lips twitched to a smirk. “First I had Noah Treneary as competition, then Kit.”
“He’s not competition. I just don’t want to be with you.”
“I sort of figured that out. So are you and him together?”
“Not that it’s any of your business but no, we’re not.”
“Has that got anything to do with his curly-haired friend?”
“No, I don’t think it has.”
“Does it have anything to do with me kissing you on Friday night?”
She shook her head. “It doesn’t matter why we’re not together. We’re just not.”
“If it’s because of me, I’m sorry.”
“He thinks I still have feelings for you,” she admitted. “I’m not sure how to convince him otherwise.”
“I hope you figure things out.” He was almost at the door when she called him back.
“I’m sorry if I hurt you when we were together.”
He shrugged. “It wasn’t meant to be.”
“If it makes you feel any better, I had it out with Noah. He admitted what he’d said to you on my birthday and we’re no longer speaking.”
