“But you’d let me do it?”

“Yeah. We’d have to do some trial runs, and you’d have to swat up on the area and be okay giving the guided tour as you drive … but I have a script for that so you could theoretically just learn it by heart.”

“Are you really serious?” Keira asked, hands on her hips. “You’re offering me a job?”

He shrugged. “Yeah. Why not?”

She bit down on her lip, looking a little teary-eyed as she came around and hugged him, not caring about his sweat-soaked T-shirt. “Thank you,” she whispered.

“Do you seriously want to drive the train?” Noah asked her, the corners of his mouth twitching in amusement.

“Yes!” She remained with an arm slung around Kit’s shoulders. “It sounds brilliant. Working outside, chatting to holidaymakers and telling them about this lovely island while taking in the wonderful views.”

“It’s not many hours,” Kit said. “Mostly I do three trips a day in the summer. Maybe four in August when the island’s busiest. A trip around the island only takes an hour.”

“That’s perfect,” Keira said. “It’ll fit around my other work.”

“It would be a good way for you to meet people,” Kit agreed. “You can come along with me sometime and see what you think. Being a tour guide isn’t for everyone.”

“I really think I’d enjoy it,” Keira said enthusiastically.

The conversation was interrupted by Noah’s phone vibrating on the counter. “It’s Trystan,” he said as he scanned the message. “He’s not going to make it over for the next few weeks. Work’s busy, apparently.”

Kit frowned. “More like he’s hiding away and licking his wounds over Jenny. I still can’t believe they’ve split up. I thought they’d work things out.”

“Have you spoken to him much recently?” Noah asked.

“No,” Kit replied. Even though their older brother lived in London, he usually visited a lot and was very good at keeping in touch by phone, but he’d been quiet recently. “He seems to be throwing himself into work. Never has time to chat when I call.”

“Same with me,” Noah said.

“I was thinking of heading over to London one weekend to see how he’s doing. Any chance you can take care of the train if I go next weekend?”

“Sure,” Noah agreed. “I just need to check I can rearrange my shifts at the pub, but it shouldn’t be a problem.”

“Or maybeyoucan drive the train,” Kit said to Keira with a cheeky grin.

“Next weekend?” she asked, wide-eyed. “I don’t know. I might need a bit longer to learn the ropes …”

“We can do it together,” Noah said. “It’ll be a laugh.”

“That sounds better,” Keira said with relief.

“It’ll be nice to get away for a weekend,” Kit said, thinking of a weekend in London with his brother. “If Trystan’s not too heartbroken over Jenny anyway.”

“You should invite Seren,” Keira said, eyes sparkling.

“What?”

“You should ask Seren to go to London with you. If you spend the whole weekend together it might give her a chance to see you in a different light.”

“Seren knows me as well as anyone does.” Kit rolled his shoulders and stretched his neck. “If she needs to see me in a different light to realise she likes me then we have a problem.”

“But sometimes you get so used to having someone around that you take them for granted … spending quality time together might make her open her eyes to what she’s missing.”

“I’m fairly sure I just offered you a job to distract you from matchmaking,” Kit said dryly. “That didn’t last long.”

“You could at leastaskher to go with you,” she said, with a gentle roll of her eyes. “What harm can that do?”
