He blew out a breath. “Fine. I’ll ask her. If only to prove a point.”

“What point?” Keira asked.

“That she’s not interested. If there was even the tiniest part of her that was interested in me, she’d be keen for a weekend away with me, wouldn’t she?”

“Yeah, I’d say so.”

“Good. So, I’ll invite her and when she says no you can drop your matching notions. Deal?”

Keira pouted. “I think she’ll say yes.”

“We’ll find out,” he said, already feeling the hurt of her turning him down. Which she inevitably would. There was no doubt in his mind.

CHAPTERTHREE

Seren smiled at the cute young guy walking up to the bar shortly after she’d opened on Monday morning.

“Hello!” he said cheerfully.

Inwardly she winced as she registered it was Kit but tried to keep her facial expression fixed. “You look different,” she said, thinking she might need an eye test. How on earth had she managed to not recognise him again?

“Just got a haircut,” he told her.

“Looks good.” Casually, she straightened the drip tray under the beer tap. “Bit early for a drink, isn’t it?”

“Yep.” The way he looked her right in the eyes made her self-conscious. “I’ll have a coffee, please.”

She turned and put a cup on the coffee machine, then pressed the button for a cappuccino.

“I wanted to ask you something,” Kit said, making her glance back at him. “I’m going to visit Trystan next weekend. Any chance you fancy coming with me?”

She put his drink in front of him and tilted her head as though she hadn’t heard the question.

“Everyone’s worried about how he’s dealing with the break-up with Jenny,” Kit went on. “He’s not talking about it much, so I thought I’d go and hang out with him for a weekend.” He paused and sipped his coffee. “I thought you might fancy a weekend away …”

“You want me to go with you?” she asked slowly. “To London?”

“Yeah.”

She puffed out her cheeks and tried to ignore the way her heart was pounding. The new haircut seemed to change the whole shape of Kit’s face. It felt as though she was standing opposite a stranger. A hot stranger. One who was asking her to go to London with him.

“I’m not sure I’d be able to get out of work,” she finally said.

“That’s what I thought, but I wanted to check just in case.”

“Thanks. I mean it does sound like fun. I haven’t been to London since I was a kid. And I’ve been worried about Trystan too.”

“I’m sure he’d like to see you,” Kit said. “And you’d be better at talking to him about Jenny. I’m not great at emotional stuff.”

“AndIam?” Her eyebrows shot up. “Because I’m a woman?”

“Yeah.” His tone was deadly serious but his mouth twitched to a smile as he lifted his coffee to his lips again.

“Idiot!” she said lightly.

“So do you want to try and get out of work and come with me? We can do some sightseeing and stuff. It’ll be a laugh.”

Seren tapped the polished wood of the bar as a battle raged within her. It was slightly disturbing how much she wanted to say yes. It wasn’t very often that she went away anywhere, so that was probably part of the attraction. Unfortunately, she knew it was only a tiny part of why she was desperate to say yes.
