Page 95 of A Change of Heart
Giving her feet a break, she perched on a stool at the end of the bar. “Fine.” She glared at him. “Did you make Felix believe there was something going on between the two of us?”
“The two ofus?” he repeated, waving a finger between them.
“Yes. You and me. When I was with Felix, did you say anything to make him believe I was cheating on him with you?”
He shrugged. “I don’t think so. I always enjoyed winding him up, but it wasn’t serious.”
“So on my birthday you didn’t imply that I was sleeping with you?”
“I might have made a joke about you sleeping at my place more often than his.” He rolled his eyes and leaned onto the bar. “What’s with all the questions?”
“Did you tell him I was planning on splitting up with him?”
He straightened up, eyes flicking to the window. “Not that I remember.”
“I can tell when you’re lying, Noah.”
“Fine. He was pissing me off and I might have said something along those lines. It’s not a big deal, is it?”
“Kind of, yes.” She raised her voice, then lowered it when she realised there were customers at the other side of the room. “I wasn’t planning on breaking up with him.”
“Things definitely weren’t good between you. You were always complaining about him being possessive and jealous. It was pathetic how he had such an issue with you spending time with me.”
“Was it? Or did he have a point? Maybe I should have been more considerate of his feelings. He was jealous of me spending time with you, and I told him he was being ridiculous.”
“Itwasridiculous.”
“I think you might have double standards.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“It means that when you got a girlfriend, you dropped me.”
“No, I didn’t.”
“We don’t hang out any more,” she pointed out.
“You could always call me if you want to hang out.”
“It’s fine with me that we don’t hang out any more, because I’m respectful of your relationship with Keira. But you didn’t pay me the same courtesy.”
“Are we seriously having this conversation? It’s not as though it was my fault that Felix broke up with you.”
“I think it was actually. At least partly.”
He threw his hands up. “The guy slept with someone else on your birthday. I don’t care what I said to him, it doesn’t excuse what he did.”
“I don’t think he slept with her,” she said sulkily.
“Are you defending the guy? I heard he wouldn’t even walk you home on Friday when it was his fault you had an allergic reaction.”
She slipped off the chair as her emotions threatened to overwhelm her. If she wasn’t careful she was going to say something she’d regret.
“Hey!” Noah followed her to the door, snatching at her elbow to stop her. “Are you really annoyed with me about something that happened seven years ago?”
“Yeah.” She shrugged him off. “You make out that Felix is the worst person in the world, but you’re just as bad as he is.”
His grip on her arm loosened until he released her. “If that’s what you think it’s a good job we don’t hang out any more.”
