“Oh, that’s how it works, is it? I’m fairly sure I said it to you about five times and you didn’t say it back.”

Smiling at the teasing in his eyes, she touched her forehead to his. “I love you, I love you, I love you.”

“I love you too,” he said, then kissed her with an intensity that made her heart flutter. It took a while for them to break apart, and Seren was left slightly breathless.

“I assumed you’d hang out with Noah for the evening,” Kit said, his face still close to hers.

“It was a bit sneaky of you to message him from my phone.”

“I know. But I knew you wouldn’t feel right until you guys sorted things out. And I knew you’d sort things out quickly if you’d just see each other.”

“You were right. We sorted everything out.” She broke away from him and lifted the takeaway boxes from her bag. “I decided I’d rather have dinner with you.”

“You took the crab cakes and ran? Nice move.”

She took them to the kitchen and popped them in the microwave, then went and perched on Kit’s knee when he sat at the kitchen table. “I also brought a change of clothes and my toothbrush. I hope that wasn’t too presumptuous.”

“Not at all,” he said, circling his arms around her waist.

“Really? Because I panicked that you’d gone cold on me earlier.”

“No.” He smiled broadly. “When you made the comment about clothes being overrated, I was tempted to sneak into your phone and tell Noah you never wanted to speak to him again.”

She chuckled. “Thanks for pushing me to smooth things over with him.”

“You’re welcome.” He touched their noses together. “I love that we tricked my brother into buying us dinner.”

“He made me promise that I’d hang out with him soon, so we might be able to do it again.”

Amusement flashed in Kit’s eyes but faded quickly. Seren’s stomach filled with butterflies as he brought his hands to cup her face. His lips met hers so tenderly that her heart seemed to swell in her chest.

They ignored the microwave when it pinged.

Dinner could wait.
