Story: Ruthless Beast
“Isn’t he?” I agree.
“Hi, baby,” Lucas coos. “Welcome to the family.”
“Luka, will you hold him while we see to his mommy, please?” Loanne says, handing Lucas our son.
“Of course.”
“Come, Ella. Let’s get you out of the birthing tub. You’ll be pushing out the placenta soon.”
“Oh, goody. More contractions.”
“Don’t worry. It’s not as painful.”
“Luacs, would you like to cut the umbilical cord?”
“Sure.”
“Now you’re a full fledged member of the dad’s club,” Ester chuckles.
“Proud to be,” he grins.
“What does he weigh?” I ask.
“Seven pounds, fourteen ounces.”
“Well done, my love,” Lucas coos. “I’m so proud of you.”
“What is his name?” Ester asks.
Lucas looks at me before he answers.
“His name is David.”

Lucas
Our son is beautiful. It was my idea to call him David. Afterall. I have David to thank for the amazing life I now have. I often think about him when I look at Emily. What started off as a terrible tragedy has culminated in such profound joy. I will be eternally grateful for his sacrifice.
Our David is growing so fast. It’s been nine months filled with new discoveries and the kind of love I was always too afraid to hope for. Emily is an amazing mom. She dotes on little Davie and lights up whenever he is in the room. He too is besotted with his mother. I am beyond blessed and I owe it all to Emily.
“I think it’s time we tied the knot, young lady,” I announce one day while Davie is having his afternoon nap.
“I was wondering how long this engagement was going to be before you locked me down,” Emily smiles.
“So, what do you say? Shall we have a small ceremony next month?”
“Yeah. We can invite our new friends. Oh, and Joanne and Ester.”
“Perfect.”
“I’ve always wanted a beach wedding,” Emily sighs as we’re lying on the beach, Davie fast asleep on the blanket with his thumb in his mouth.
“We can get married wherever you like, my love.”
Emily’s face is bright but I can see the pain in her eyes. I know what she’s trying to hide. I feel it too.
“I’m sorry your family won’t be here with us to celebrate with us,” I say, squeezing her hand.
