Story: Runner 13

Shit, is he OK?
Anon:
He’s been driven to Ouarzazate hospital. Apparently we’re going to hear from Boones at seven p.m. He’s waiting for the last runner to finish and then he’ll gather the entire bivouac for an announcement.
Mac:
That doesn’t sound good.
Anon:
I know. I’ll let you know what he says. But honestly, it was carnage out there today, especially amongst the fun runners. Everyone knows that a desert race is going to be hot. But this was hotter than any forecast predicted. Scorching. Once the main pack of runners hit the dunes, people were dropping like flies. I’ve never seen so many people needing IV drips. I don’t know exactly how many runners are out, but I assume we’ll hear about that from Boones too.
Mac:
That’s nuts. Seems like one thing after another with this race.
Anon:
That’s putting it mildly. I’ll tell you the truth: it’s not safe out here. All the runners are in danger.
Mac:
OK, mate, we hear you. It sounds tough out there – you take care of yourself. Call us back when you’ve heard the announcement? I know our listeners will be desperate to know what’s going on. Mac out, for now.
