Story: Perfect Cowboy
“You’re pregnant with my baby,” he says, looking down at me with awe in his eyes.
“Yes. I most definitely am.”
“Goddamn, you’re going to looksosexy pregnant, babe,” Gavin groans. “Now we don’t have to agonize over the timing. The universe decided for us. And I can’t wait to be a dad. I can’t wait to have ten kids with you.”
“Ten?” I demand, my eyes widening. “I mean, let’s start with this one.”
“Now that I know how easy it’s going to be to fill you up, I’m not going to stop.”
“Good thing your pull-out game is weak.”
He laughs and the happiness lighting his entire face makes my heart melt. The family man who I always knew and loved is officially back. I can’t wait until we have kids – whether it’s just this one or ten – running around our home.
He lies beside me, and I loop my leg over his hip while he uses his good hand to cradle my face and kiss me again.
But it’s so much more than a kiss.
The emotion behind his movements could never be conveyed with words.
We’re sharing our breath.
Our hearts.
Our lives.
“How are you feeling?” he asks tenderly.
“Perfectly fine,” I reply. “If I’m going to get morning sickness, it hasn’t hit me yet.”
“Anything you need, just tell me. I’m always here for you. And I love you so much.”
“I love you, too. I’m so glad you’re happy.”
“Of course I’m happy. We made a baby together. I can’t think of anything more perfect to solidify our commitment to each other than expanding our family.”
“I hope we get a mini Gavin.”
“And I hope we get a mini Ashley.”
I kiss him again, and it’s so easy to lose track of time when I’m in his arms. I’ve never been happier just being with someone and sharing the same space.
“As much as I want to stay here and talk to you, fuck you, and just hold you, we have to go. Everyone is waiting.”
“I know,” I reply, “And I’m sorry that I told you now, but it’s the first moment we’ve been alone today, and I couldn’t wait any longer. But you can’t tell them. It’s too early. I want to get to the twelve-week mark before anyone other than us knows.”
“Not even Bobby?”
They don’t have secrets, and it would be unfair of me to ask him not to tell his twin our big news.
After a second of hesitation, I say, “Fine, only Bobby. But then he’ll tell Savanna.”
Gavin shakes his head. “He won’t. Not if I ask him not to.”
“Your parents are going to be so mad.”
“Probably,” Gavin agrees. “But it’s our life, and we’re doing things our own way. It wasn’t the order I intended for us, but everything is more fun with unexpected curves in the road. I trust the timing of my life, and a baby must be what we need right now.”
“I trust the timing of my life, too. And I know why I didn’t get pregnant before now. I was meant to have your babies. My body was waiting for my soul mate.”
