Story: One Good Reason
Folding up the set of papers, Corrine tucked them in the pocket of her jacket and stood. “I’m going to get started on my motion as soon as I get back to the office. Lawton, I’ll call you with any new developments.”
“Thank you so much Corrine for doing this on such short notice.”
“You know it’s no problem at all. I’m just glad I could be of service.”
Tapping me on the thigh, Law motioned for me to stand. “I’m going to walk her out. I’ll be right back.”
When the pair left the living room, Mrs. Jessie turned to me. “How you feeling Tali?”
“Like I failed yet another person. First it was Quan and now Gema. I feel like I just can’t get ahead. All I want is peace and all I keep getting is bullshit.”
“God gives his hardest battles to his toughest soldiers,” she avowed.
“Well, can you call him and tell him I’m tired?” I chuckled softly, making light out of the situation. “Matter of fact, tell him I can’t bare anything else. Sis shoulders is hurting from carrying all of this weight.”
“Nonsense my child. You were made for adversity. Don’t let this one little thing cause you to crumble. In the end victory, will rain.” Patting me on the shoulder Mrs. Jessie stood and walked out of the room.
Folding my arms, I pouted. “I’m in the middle of fighting for custody of my elderly grandmother and your solution to my problems is a vacation.”
“Corrine said she would start working on it Monday. Today was the first time you agreed to leave the room. We’re not going backwards Talitha,” Law expressed while helping Baker toss our luggage into the back of the truck.
“I don’t see how this is supposed to help me, though.”
“Change of scenery might do you some good, Miss Talitha.” Baker smirked.
“Great.” I tossed my arms up in the air. “He’s got you agreeing with his madness.”
“Whatever he says.” Baker shrugged.
After Corrine left, Mrs. Jessie, Law, and I had lunch together. Nearing the end of our meal, Law informed us that he and I would be spending the rest of the week out of town. Mrs. Jessie agreed that it might do some good so after she left for the day, Lawton invaded my closet and packed my things up for me. Only problem was he wouldn’t tell me where the hell we were getting ready to go.
He claimed he wanted to see the look on my face when we reached our final destination. Apparently, he had told Mrs. Jessie and she agreed with him that he should wait until he and I arrived. I, on the other hand, was afraid to admit that I had been held up in the house in hopes that my mama would come to her senses and drop Gema back off to me.
I knew I was wishing for the unimaginable, but I couldn’t help but hold out hope. Me being away from home lowkey had me feeling like I was going to miss something. So, since Mrs. Jessie agreed with Law, I asked her if she would mind staying at the house. Ya’ know, just in case and she agreed so I was feeling good about that. I had even called Betty Jo before I gave in and told her if she saw Gema to call me as soon as she could. She promised she would and that was about the only reason I said yes. I still wasn’t happy that the man wouldn’t disclose where he was getting ready to drag me off to.
“Want me to set the alarm?” he queried after he finished playing around in the back of the truck.
“No. Mrs. Jessie will be back before night fall, and I don’t want to have her trying to rush into the house to cut the alarm off.”
“Okay.” Smacking me on the ass, Law motioned for me to get into the truck.
I sucked my teeth before sliding into the back. “Can you give me a hint?” I asked when he was seated beside me.
“We’re going somewhere warm.”
“I would hope so,” I moaned.
“Just sit back and enjoy the ride.” He chuckled.
“Enjoy the ride my ass,” I mumbled.
Like the first time we went out of town together, Law had us flying on his private jet. After passing our bags off to the flight crew, we made our way onto the jet. The minute my ass hit the buttery leather seats, I swear I was out. I didn’t wake up until we had landed safely. When I checked the time on my phone, I noticed time zones weren’t different and realized we hadn’t traveled far. As I was being ushered off the plane, I waited for my eyes to adjust to the sun and peered around the hangar. As soon as I noticed where we had landed, a wide smile broke out on my face.
“You brought me to Miami?” I gushed.
“I didn’t want to go too far off in case anything happened.” Law cool ass shrugged. Placing his hand at the small of my back, he ushered me toward the blacked Tahoe.
Before getting into the back of the truck, I threw my arms around his neck. “Thank you so much for this Harvey,” I cooed before leaning in to kiss his lips.
