Story: Her Vagabond Heart

“He might.”
“And get your blood all over his perfect suit and shiny shoes?” Farris couldn’t suppress a chuckle, which had the effect of calming my bristling nerves. “Alright. Call him. I’m interested in finding out what the fuck he’s up to.”
Farris made the call, spoke briefly before pocketing her phone. “Air strip,” was all she said.
“What do you mean, air strip? Where are you taking me?”
“That is the extent of my knowledge, ma’am.”
“How long will I be away?”
“I couldn’t say, Ma’am.”
I rolled my eyes. “Right. Well, I’m not going without Patti.”
Another alarmed look between Farris and Wes. “Patti, ma’am?”
“My kitten.”
“Your…kitten?”
“Yes!” Another eye roll. “Why don’t you call Mr. Rivers and ask if I should bring Patti.”
“Uh, yes. Alright then. That’s probably the best idea.” I’m pretty sure Farris’s hands were shaking a little when she took her phone from her pocket and pressed Grayson’s details. I could tell the moment he answered the call because she winced. “Not yet, sir. No.”
He said something that turned the wince into a full-blown flinch. I held my hand out, wriggling my fingers impatiently. “Lemme talk to him.” Farris’s shoulders slumped with relief and she handed the phone over without argument. “What the fuck, Grayson? This had better be important.”
“Stefania.”
“Who else would it be! And don’t say my name like that, all…”
“It is important. Very important.”
Oh. “Okay then. Since I know fuck all about what’s happening, I don’t know if I should bring Patti, or if I’ll be back in time.”
There was silence for a moment. Then, “Bring her.”
“And will I be seeing you on this unexpected adventure?”
“Yes.”
Everything has an upside, I guess. “Fantastic. We’re on our way. I assume.”
Wes’s eyes just about bugged out of his head when I ended the call. “What?”
He shook his head in confusion. “He…doesn’t scare you?”
I snorted. “Fuck no. He’s just a big teddy bear once you get to know him.”
Now it was Farris’s turn to stare at me.
“He is!” At least I had enough self-restraint not to mention Grayson’s amazing cock.
It took me less than five minutes to dash back to my apartment. Because I had absolutely no idea what was going on, I threwenough for two nights away in an overnight bag. Then I scooped Patti up, threw her bed, bowl and food at Wes, slung my bag over my shoulder and said, “Let’s go.”
We drove to the airstrip, and once we were there, Farris called Grayson again. “New York.”
New York???
