“Why, thank you,” Tyler said with a bow.
“You haven’t even seen the office yet. You’re going to love it.”
When Tyler had come for his interview, Christine had taken him into one of the meeting rooms off reception. He was eager to see what lay in store.
He didn’t have to wait long. Christine Jack came through the door. A short woman with a happy face, she crossed the reception area with alarming speed and stuck her hand out.
“Tyler. So good to see you again.”
Dressed in jeans and a cardigan, she stopped dead. “Oh, I forgot to tell you. We dress down here. There’s no need for a suit.”
Great, now I’ll look like the new boy all day.
He followed her through the big double doors and into the world of Pleasure Seekers. He hadn’t really had any expectations. Even so, he was blown away when he walked into a vast space that had to stretch across the whole roof of the warehouse.
He didn’t see any private offices. There were a few meetings rooms yet nothing for the top brass.
How modern.
“It’s a bit of a hotch-potch,” Christine said, strolling ahead. “We don’t have desks as such. Just find a place in the morning and that’s you set. It makes avoiding people very easy. The trick is to get in early and find one of the single desks by the window.”
Tyler glanced over at people hunched over laptops.
“Today, I’ve asked the team to take desks over by the common area.”
They were in the centre of the space when she stopped still. Tyler nearly ran into her.
“Okay. Four zones. Colour coded,” she said.
Tyler had already clocked a purple corner as well as orange, green and black.
“Purple is interacting. Sit there if you don’t mind being disturbed. It’s over by the common area—need I say more?”
A few desks bordered a large comfortable seating area. Kitchen units, microwaves and fridges lined the far wall.
“This is great,” Tyler said.
“Orange is for meetings and sit-downs. There are desks there but it’s noisier than purple. Do not even think about it.”
“Noted.”
“Green is ‘I’m here to work. You can disturb me but I’d rather you didn’t’ kind of vibe.”
The green area was far bigger than any of the others.
“I guess most people end up there.”
Christine nodded. “For the time being, I’d aim for there.”
“And the black? I’m almost afraid to ask.”
“That’s where we strip you naked and burn you at the stake.”
“I figured as much.”
Christine appraised him. Tyler hoped he’d made a connection. So far, so good.
“Really, it’s the quiet space. Treat it like the library. If you as much as sneeze in there, Barry will be after your guts. Isn’t that right, Barry?”
