Page 21 of The Baby Contract

I was filled with anticipation.

Now, that Boris was gone, like he should be, I was much freer to be around Millie. My wolf was excited about this news, pawing at my chest in fierce anticipation to be next to our pregnant female without his stupid rules.

My heart jumped in my chest as I stood outside the door, gripping the knob. Her scent had changed over the last few weeks, from its sweet pungent rose smell, now mixing with mine, as our baby grew inside of her.

And, I loved that.

I stared at my reflection in the glass window, being sure to adjust the collar of my shirt and tame my wild hair. I wanted to look good for this moment.

I took one last deep breath before pushing the door open, my nose filling with the sweet scent that I desperately craved. Moreover, the sight that could make any man faint.

Millie sat on the exam table, looking down intently at her hands as she twilled her thumbs in anxiousness. Her legs hung off the table, still and rigid. A thin, blue and white hospital gown covered her body, her long brunette hair hanging over her shoulders.

"Ah!" Doctor Rowan beamed, causing Millie's head to snap up. "Alpha Stormblade, right on time."

Millie's sweet, innocent eyes met mine for a moment, a look of terror flashing across them. She quickly lowered her eyes, my wolf whining at the loss of eye contact. Her hands, which she had once played with, now shaking slightly.

"Alpha, please take a seat," the doctor said, ushering me to a chair next to Millie's exam table. "We haven't gotten started yet."

Millie stayed in her place, her head hung low, her face as white as paper. My heartbeat rapidly as I took her appearance, her pregnancy glow, and her growing bump.

I fought the urge to run to her. My wolf was purring inside of me, ready to comfort Millie and our baby.

"Thank you, Doctor," I cleared my throat, lowering myself onto the plastic chair. "Millie." I greeted her, giving her a small smile.

My voice made her jump slightly in her place. "Uh-I am sorry, Alpha." She moved her eyes to look in my direction, keeping her eyes low. She bowed slightly in her place, showing her respect for my title.

"Okay-" Doctor Rowan cut in, noticing the awkwardness growing in the air. "Well, I am glad you are both here for the first ultrasound. I am sure you are both very excited to see your baby for the first time." He smiled, pulling up a chair beside the big, ultrasound machine.

I moved my chair closer to the bed, fighting the urge to reach out to Millie. I wanted desperately to calm her, rub her hand gently, assure her that it was all right, and tell her how excited we were to see our little pup for the first time.

"How is your hand feeling, Millie?" Doctor Rowan asked, putting on his glasses as he looked down at his paperwork.

Millie studied her hands in her lap. "It's better. Thank you, Doctor." She whispered so low only my wolf caught it.

"Very good-"He spun around in his chair, getting close to inspect Millie's hand, a low rumble slipping out of my chest at their contact. "It looks brand new!"

My wolf let out a small gruff of relief as the Doctor let go of her hand. "Keep the touching to a minimum, Doctor," I growled lowly, feeling protective.

"My apologies, Alpha." He smiled as he prepared his equipment. "I see you are getting quite protective of your pup. That is a good sign."

Doctor Rowan moved to adjust the bed, moving it back so that Millie could lie down. "Go ahead and lay on your back, dear."

Millie followed his instructions, looking up at the ceiling as she played nervously with her hands. "This will feel a bit cold-"Doctor Rowan said, before squeezing some gel on Millie's sweet bump.

"I must say, you have gotten quite big over the last few weeks," The Doctor chucked, as he lowered his wand over Millie's tummy, surveying the screen as he moved it around to get a good look.

I watched the screen, anxious to get a glimpse of our pup. It felt so right being here with Millie right now, next to her side as we both saw our offspring for the first time.

The Doctor's brows furrowed as he studied the screen, moving the wand to get a good look. He moved forward, squinting his eyes as he studied the image.

"What is it?" I growled, not liking the silence in the room. "Spit it out."

Millie's hands shook slightly as she surveyed the doctor's face. "Alpha, Millie, if you look here- "he pointed to a point on the screen. "You can see two fetuses."

Millie's face drained even more than I thought it could. "You mean, two babies?" She whispered bravely, her body shivering.

Doctor Rowan nodded, confirming his sightings. "Congratulations." He beamed, displaying the biggest white smile I have ever seen. "You are having twins."

Millie gasped, shooting up on the bed. "Twins?" she yelled, her chest heaving as she let out small, exasperated breaths.

"Millie-" I softened, reaching out for her hand, desperate to calm her nerves. "Hey, It's okay-"

Millie shot out of bed, her hands strapped consciously across her chest. Doctor Rowan and I looked with our eyes wide, shocked at her reaction.

Her whole body shook as she looked at the picture on the screen, her face lighting up in pure shock and terror. Her eyes watered, becoming red as she shook.

I stood, worried about Millie's outburst. "Millie, It's fine-"

Millie's eyes snapped towards me, tears now threatening to fall from her beautiful brown eyes. She looked so broken, fragile...

I reached out for Millie's hand, desperate to soothe her. "No!" she cried, her tears falling as she ran for the door, "Get away from me!"

Millie ran out of the room, slamming the door behind her. Doctor Rowan looked shocked at her sudden outburst, standing rigid as he took in what should have been a happy scene.

We were having twins.

"Millie, stop!" I quickly grabbed her clothes off the chair, flying out of the room, as I went to catch up to her.

She sobbed as she ran up the stairs, her breathing ragged and uncontrollable. Her face was red, and full of pain as she ignored me, making her way up the stairs.

"Millie, come on," I begged, quickly catching up to her. "Can you stop?"

Millie ignored me, leaving me to follow her like a lost puppy. She ran up to the top floor, the guards immediately opening the doors, letting us in.

"Millie, can we talk?" I sighed, watching as she opened the door to my suite, her knuckles white as she wrapped them around the door.

"Talk?" her voice cracked, covered in disbelief. "You want to talk?"

She sobbed, putting the door in between us. I put my hand on the heavy, oak door, trying to keep it open.

"Talk about what?" she cried, rubbing her tears away angrily. "This is great for you, isn't it?"

She struggled with his words as she looked down, putting a shaky hand on her belly. "Two for the price of one, huh?"

I took a deep breath, fighting the urge to take Millie in my arms and hold her close. My wolf wanted to scoop her up, rub her back, and let her cry on my chest as we comforted her in our warmth and scent.

"Millie, please-" I sighed, shaking my head. "I-"

"You what?" she yelled. "You hate me? I know. I didn't think that my life could get more miserable, in fact, I thought it would even get better when I came here to your pack. But instead, I get locked up in my room, watched at every second of the day, and abused by you-"

She sobbed, her words coming out mumbled. "Millie, hey-" I softened, my wolf whining inside of me. "I know-"

"You know nothing," she snarled. "You don't know how I feel. You don't even sympathize with me. You have expressed nothing but pure hatred since the day I stepped foot on your lands."

"And, you wouldn't know what it feels like to be someone poor-"she stepped towards me, stabbing her finger into my chest. "-who struggles just to keep their stomach quiet throughout the night."

"I didn't know-"

"Of course, you don't-"she screamed. "You don't know the slightest of what it feels like to be someone like me. To have to give up- "

She cried, not able to get the words out. I grabbed her wrist slightly, my skin tingling in delight at our contact.

Millie's face fumed as she quickly snapped her eyes down to see our contact, and snatching her hand away. "Don't touch me!"

"You are very worked up," I said, staying calm. "Why don't I help you get you into bed to relax?"

"Help me?" she grunted. "I don't want any of your help."

She moved back, placing her hand on the door. "In fact, why don't you just stay the fuck away from me? Wasn't that in your fucking contact anyways?" she snarled, slamming the door shut.

I sighed, looking at the wooden door, recovering from what had just happened. I leaned my head against the door, taking deep breaths as her words rang in my head, leaving my wolf sad, wallowing in her disapproval of him.

"Didn't go so well for you, huh?" Aspen said from behind me. I hadn't even noticed that anyone was here in the suite with us.

"Not a good time, Aspen." I snapped, keeping my head on the door, desperate to catch Millie's scent again. "Go away."

"I don't blame her," Aspen shrugged, going to unlock her door. "I've been wanting to lash out at you for years." She scoffed.

"Shut up."

"Look, big brother," she let out a big sigh. "If you want Millie to like you, you are going to have to change."

"I don't-"

"Mmm hmm." Aspen smirked, "Yes you do. Would you be here wallowing in heartbreak at her door if you didn't?"
