The priest splutters out a cough, then I’m met with more silence.
“Father? Are you still there?”
His voice is strained when he speaks again. “I’m here. It’s a good thing you came to confessional. It means you’re already one step closer to being a good girl.”
I try not to gag again.
“I’m going to need you to tell me exactly what you’ve done. Every sinful act and thought. The more details you give me, the better I can help absolve you.”
Ah, there it is. The same sick lie that all the other men like him we’ve come across use. Father Stone was right. They weren’t the last, but I’m working on eradicating as many as I can.
Zack and I have spent the past five years travelling from church to church, finding the devils that lurk inside and giving them the punishment they deserve.
We found more men along the way that had nothing to do with the convent. They were ordinary men. Blue-collar workers, sleaze bags in nightclubs, dads in playgrounds. The world is full of scum.
“The other girls who were sinful like me…did you help absolve them the same way?”
The priests breathing gets heavier, and he grunts out, “Idid. Now, please, hurry up and tell me what you’ve done before?—”
“Before you come?”
He makes a startled grunting noise and chokes out, “What? No, I’m here to help you.”
I let out an exasperated sigh. “Baby, I’m bored of this one, and you promised me gelato. Can we get this over with already?”
There’s a sudden loud crack, and the confessional booth shakes. The priest screams and the panel separating us shatters inwards. I lift my arm to block the splintered wood from hitting me in the face.
Zack is holding the priest up by his floppy brown hair as his head and shoulders are forced into my side of the booth. He punches away some more of the wood so he can see me.
“Do you want to start with lemon or chocolate?” he asks with a smile.
“Hmm.” I tap my finger against my chin as I think about it. With my other hand, I flip open my switchblade. Zack pulls the priest’s head back, exposing his throat to me and I drag my blade across it. Dark, red blood pours out onto my jeans and sneakers. It’s a good thing we brought a change of clothes with us for this one.
I stretch up and kiss Zack. He drops the body, letting it hang between us so he can lean through the broken partition to kiss me deeper. When he pulls away, he chuckles as he wipes his thumb across my chin. Holding it up, he shows me the blood. “How about cherry?”
“Mmm, sounds perfect.”
We step out of the booth and strip out of our dirty clothes, tossing them and any evidence inside with the priest. I slip into a new white sundress and heels, while Zack puts on a short-sleeve black shirt and dark chinos. Then we set fire to the confessional and leave through the backdoor.
The priest was one of many on our very belated honeymoon hit list here in Italy. There was a lot of work to do back home before we could branch out with our killing.
The alley behind the church is quiet. The whole place is since the priest closed off the entire place so he could have me to himself. He didn’t have a clue that I was aware of any of his plans or his previous misgivings.
Zack and I leave down the alley; I pop my sunglasses and sun hat on so we can blend into the bustling crowd that is just around the corner. Zack puts his own sunglasses on and holds his arm out for me to take.
“I’m surprised you’re not rubbing it in my face that he showed his true colors so quickly,” I say quietly to him.
“Oh, I will, when you’re on your knees for me in the Vatican.”
“You want me to suck your dick in the Vatican? How very sinful!”
He smirks down at me and shrugs his shoulders nonchalantly. “When in Rome.”
“Okay. You’re treating me to every flavor of gelato after, and pizza.”
“Anything for you, darlin’.”
Sirens sound out in the distance, and I grip Zack a little tighter. My smile doesn’t leave my face. I’m not scared of getting caught. After all, we’ve been doing this for years now and have never slipped up. Zack would never allow anything bad to happen to me, nor I him.
We’re in this together, forever.
