Page 72 of Saving His Heart
Emory takes the large, manilla envelope he grabbed from the entryway table.
“What’s this?” she asks, looking between us.
I have no idea, so I just shrug.
“That, Emory,” Ashton makes a show of pointing to the envelope, “is everything you’ll need to become Dr. Camden again.”
Goldie wobbles on her sexy as hell shoes that have sparkly straps crossing every which way.
“Wh-What?”
Reaching for her, I hold her elbow to steady her. Ashton seems concerned about her as well because he grabs her other arm.
“Sorry, maybe I need to work on my delivery? Anyway, Dr. Terry should receive his copy any time now. You’ll have no problem putting Donny the douche-canoe away with everything I pulled on him and that corrupt doctor of his. He really is sleazy, Ems. How the hell did you end up with that Jersey-Shore nut monkey? Never mind, don’t answer that. The only thing I wasn’t able to do was change your hearing date, so you’ll have to wait for the official Dr. Camden name until January. We ready to go?”
I stare at my brother with pride. He was only fifteen when our father died. He had to lean on the rest of us for guidance. With four older brothers, plus Loki, he always had someone around, but I know we were no substitute for a father. Still, I’m so proud of the man he is today.
“Thank you, Ash—”
I don’t finish because Emory has flung herself at him, and my body tenses with irrational jealousy.
“Okay, that’s enough. We have a wedding to get to,” I tell them as I pull Emory away.
“Ashton, h-how did you do this?”
“When you work with Loki as long as I have, you learn a few things,” he says cryptically.
I only recently learned that Ash had been hacking for Loki since he was sixteen. Now, he runs the technology branch of Westbrook Enterprises, but I know he and Loki have something in the works on the side. I just haven’t figured out what yet.
“Thank you, Ashton. Honestly, thank you so much,” Emory sobs.
“Sweetheart, I’m so happy for you, but we really have to get going. Do you want to touch up your makeup, or should I let Ashton punch me so we can both have raccoon eyes in the pictures?”
“I vote for the punch,” Ashton grumbles, and I roll my eyes in his direction.
“Oh, Preston. I’m going to get to be a surgeon again. I’m going to be Dr. Camden.”
“I know, baby. I’m so happy for you.”
“Just give me a second, and I’ll grab my bag. I can fix my makeup in the car.”
I watch as she practically bounces toward our bedroom. For once, all is right in my world.
All except my broken heart.
Chapter 30
Emory
I’ve never pictured my wedding. That’s probably weird to admit, but I’ve never even thought about it. I would spend hours with Eli and Sloane as they planned their weddings down to the smallest of details, but I was always the guest. Sometimes, Sloane would decide I needed to be the mother of the bride. But it never occurred to me to think of a wedding in any other terms. I had goals, responsibilities, plans, and I only had myself to rely on. Even after living with Donny for so long, I never pictured myself in a white dress. Yet, here I am. Standing before the judge in the cheapest white dress I could find that Preston would agree to, preparing to exchange vows.
I may not have imagined a wedding, but Preston, in his white tux jacket and black pants, is every little girl’s hero. His dark hair and blue eyes stand out against his tanned skin. He’s striking.
“Never have I ever loved anyone more than I love you.”
I feel the color drain from my face.
“Are we ready?” the judge asks.
