Page 40 of Saving His Heart
“Okay, sweetheart. I’m going to get ready for bed, but I promise to stay on my side.” I kiss the side of her head and begrudgingly let her go.
After brushing my teeth and stripping down to boxer briefs, I step out into the darkened bedroom. Squinting until my eyes adjust, I find Ems hanging off the edge of the bed with her back to me.
“Ems?”
“Yeah?” Her voice is small.
“I’m not going to bite, you know? Not unless you want me to,” I can’t help but add. “You don’t have to cling to the edge like that.”
“Nope, I’m good. This is how I always sleep,” she lies.
“Suit yourself. Goodnight. Oh, and, Ems?”
“Yeah?”
“Thank you for tonight, and for the best fucking sex of my life.”
“Ah, you’re welcome?”
“Hey, Ems?”
“Yes, Preston?”
“How do you like your eggs in the morning? Scrambled or fertilized?”
The beautiful sound of her laughter fills the room and makes all the other shit from today totally worth it. I will die a happy man if I can hear that every night.Too bad, you’ll be a happy man before you know it.Where the hell is this voice in my head coming from? I really need to talk to fucking Dexter, and soon.
I lie in bed, unable to sleep most of the night, trying to make sense of the last twenty-four hours. However, I keep coming up empty. The final thoughts that run through my mind before sleep finally overtakes me are,Make sure Emory is taken care of, and why couldn’t I be the man to care for her for a lifetime instead of the man for just right now?

I wakemyself up trying to swat hair from my mouth, except my hair isn’t long enough to reach my mouth. Either GG snuck a goddamn cat into my home, or …
Peeling one eye open, I come face to face with a head full of blonde hair. Trying not to move a muscle, I take in the situation.
Emory is fast asleep on top of me. Her head rests on my chest, just below my chin, and her entire body is plastered to mine. That would also explain the raging morning wood I’m sporting. Ever so gently, I turn my head to the right to see what could have happened to her pillow barricade and almost laugh out loud when I see it parted in the middle. It’s like she tunneled through it to get to me, and my heart does a funny little skip it’s never done before.
Instead of moving, I lay here, holding her, breathing her in, and enjoying the moment I know she will freak out about. At some point, I started caressing her arm, and feel the instant she wakes up, and her body goes stiff.
“Good morning, Emory.” I don’t attempt to hide the humor lacing my early morning voice.
Her head springs up like it was shot out of a cannon.
“What are you doing?” she whisper yells.
“Me? I’m not doing anything, Miss I Never Ever Move In My Sleep.”
“I … you … how did you get me over here?” She pushes herself up to sit and lands directly on top of my hard-on. “Eeep,” she squeals and moves, but is unsure of where to go.
Placing my hands on her hips, I still her. “Goldie, if you keep moving like that, my cock is liable to spring free and impale you.”
I love the shocked intake of air my words cause.
“Why do you call me Goldie sometimes?”
With my hands holding her in place, I gently grind up and into her involuntarily. “Because you fit me just right,” I grin.
“Huh?”
