Page 59 of Redemption
Redemption still looked mad as he retorted, “One of us needs to be there, Dad.”
“Yes, I know you feel like you need to be,” Talon said. “But you can’t go off on your own. That could get you or her killed—”
“Don’t you fucking say that,” Redemption growled.
“See?” Talon argued. “No calm. You are too hotheaded and unpredictable.”
“So says the underground fighter who likes to gamble.”
Everyone paused to look over at me.
I realized I just did it again…Opened my mouth before my mind could stop me. But I kept going anyway, “You said at the start that Jarret and Redemption could go, Talon.”
Talon shook his head. “For the exchange, Cinnamon. Not a rescue mission.”
“Damn Talon, if it was me they took, you would stay here and sit on your ass to wait?”
We all now looked over at Liv, who had now gotten in on the conversation or argument.
Talon raised his arms up in frustration, then he dropped them and glared at Redemption. “Just remember what I said. If you act instead of think, you could endanger Glory. Meet us at the barn at one am.”
“So you are doing this in the dark?” Jarret asked.
“Of course he is, Dad,” Redemption said. “The cover of darkness is the best cover to have.” He stared at Talon as he spoke.
“We will have your tach gear ready,” Talon told him. “Including night vision. Be there at one.” He stalked out of the security room.
“Damn, he is…” Jewel stared at the empty doorway.
“An asshole?” Liv smirked.
“Commanding, unbendable, headstrong and a leader,” Logan added.
“Wow,” I said. “That sounds just like you, Redemption.”
He snapped his gaze over at me.
I gave him a huge grin.
Jarret actually chuckled.
Redemption now looked over at him with a shocked expression on his face.
Shrugging, Jarret said, “I’m beginning to see the benefits of…Cinnamon.” Shaking his head, he left the room.
“Whoa!” Jewel laughed and glanced over at a very quiet Prophet. “I see you stayed out of it.”
He pushed his hands into his jean pockets. “Do I look stupid to you?” He shook his head. “When you see two speeding trains coming at each other, you don’t dare step on those tracks.”
I laughed then went over to loop my arm through Redemption’s. “Come on scrappy, let’s go find some of Ma’s sweet tea and maybe we can get a snickerdoodle.”
“Snicker…” Redemption shook his head. “What the hell is a snickerdoodle?”
Jewel laughed. “Is he serious?”
I nodded.
“Damn, man.” Jewel rolled her eyes. “Any southerner knows what that is. It’s a cookie rolled in cinnamon sugar…” She paused as she realized the joke and her eyes rounded as she stared at me.
