Zane reached for me, confusion twisting his expression. “I beg your pardon?”
I waved vaguely in the direction of the bar and dismissed him with a glance. “Go have a drink. I’ll be done soon.”
Because now I wanted to finish this mission just so I could have an excuse to leave.
I wanted to flee from Zane and his wicked touch as soon possible.
His befuddlement morphed into shock, his hand dangling in the air after me.For show,I assumed, considering half the club had just watched us make out on the dance floor.
Shaking my head, I focused on the options, searching for a new man to play with. I needed to rid myself of Zane’s expert mouth and forget the devastating look in his eyes.
Brilliant acting, I grumbled to myself. He deserves an acting award for that performance.
Because for the briefest of moments, I’dactuallybelieved him. I’d really thought he wanted me. Laughable, though, because I knew the truth. I lived every day with how brutally he’d denied my love.
The reminder doused cold water on my nerves, freezing out the heat he’d inspired with those skilled lips. I swiped at my mouth, wishing I could remove the taste of him from my tongue.
Zane didn’t want me. Yet, for just a moment, I’d allowed myself to entertain the possibility.
Stupid, stupid, Gwen,I chastised myself. He’s said how he feels. A kiss doesn’t change that.
He only saw me as a student, aburden, a waste of time. He’d never see me as anything more.
Enough.
It’s his loss.
I stole a deep breath and lifted my head up high, forcing away the residual hurt of his devious game. Zane might not appreciate my feminine wiles, but other men did.
I had to work on unclenching my fists, because now that I’d put some distance between me and my mentor, I no longer wanted to taste him.
I wanted to throttle him.
I vowed to find the man wearing the strongest cologne here so I could roll in him and get rid of Zane’s spicy scent on my skin.
Get your head back in the game. The sooner I fed, the sooner I could leave this club and be done with Zane. At least for tonight.
I inhaled once more, then released the exhale slowly, and started to dance alone while I scanned the crowd. Typically, I followed a “nice guy” routine. I’d pick up the guy who looked like he had a hard time winning the girl, because usually that meant I wouldn’t be attracted to him. In turn, that made it easier to feed and not kill him. The more into a guy I was, the more likely I was to kill him.
Kinda like how I currently wanted to kill Zane.
Stop. No more Zane. Focus on the prize.
Except the game set out tonight wasn’t my usual play, so a “nice guy” wouldn’t cut it. I also couldn’t go for someone attractive, at least to my personal tastes, because I didn’t want to risk losing control. No, I had to choose a man deserving of the task. Which meant I needed to locate the superior asshole of the club.
If I was going to put someone in danger, it might as well be someone who’d earned it.
While Zane was currently at the top of my superior asshole list, he couldn’t fulfill the role.
So I’d find a new jackhole who fit the bill.
It wouldn’t be hard as the superior asshole was a common beast found in hot clubs like this. He’d be on the prowl—not unlike a certain incubus—with an arrogant swagger and exuding a bad boy persona that said,I’m going to fuck a woman tonight and not call her after.
My succubus soul could sense intention in lust, so I let my gaze roam until I locked onto a prime candidate.
Tall, Dark, and Horny, TDH for short, leaned against the bar not far from Zane. There was an edge to the guy that told me he favored a little pain with his pleasure.Even better. If he hurt me, I’d feel less responsible for his possible impending death.
TDH held a glass of clear liquid in one hand while the other rested on some poor girl’s shoulder as she tried to find an opening to scurry away. She looked terrified, like he was a monster and she needed to run.
