“Yes, can we go to the morgue now?” Gleason cut in, his hands tucked into the pockets of his jeans. “I’d like to review the reports. And Gwen is clearly fine.”
Eve snorted. “Yeah, until Zeb comes back and takes her to Hell.”
“That won’t be happening.” Lord Zebulon appeared while uttering the dark statement, the scents of the Underworld following him only to be eclipsed by his minty aftershave as he finished his ascent. I inhaled deeply, his cologne mingling with the notes of coffee in the air, leaving me oddly at ease.
To the point where I nearly forgot to bow. “Oh!” I started to kneel only to realize I still held a cup of hot liquid. “Damn,” I muttered, trying to find a place to set it down.
“Guinevere,” Lord Zebulon murmured, making all the hair along my arms dance on end.
“Sorry,” I breathed, seeking out the nearest table only to freeze as he wrapped his hand around my wrist and held me in place. The liquid shook in the ceramic cup, my nerves revealed for all to see.
“You don’t need to bow for me every time I enter a room,” he whispered into my ear, his chest pressed to my back. “I won’t be offended.”
“Y-yes, my lord.”
His warmth whirled around me like a comforting blanket, urging me to relax. My shoulders loosened first, followed by my arms and torso. He didn’t shift away, but did slowly release my wrist.
Zane stepped toward us, his focus on the male at my back. Rather than greet Lord Zebulon, he merely cocked a dark brow in expectation.
So bold.
So familiar.
SoZane.
I rarely ever saw him bow for Lord Zebulon. The two of them seemed to share a history that allowed the incubus to forgo formalities. It was clearly an intimate history, too, because sexual energy charged between them even now.
And I was trapped in the middle.
Their virility and power spoke to my inner succubus, awakening her with a hunger I forced myself to swallow. Not now. Not here. Not them.
Oh, but who better than to quell my need than the men at my front and back?
A delicious image of the three of us naked awoke inside my mind, stoking my need to a blazing flame that I knew Zane would be able to feel.
Lord Zebulon’s palm claimed my hip as he held me to him, his voice deep as he said, “We have twelve Earth days.”
His words sent ice through my veins.Twelve days. Would that be enough time to discover who was leaving my conquests all over Nashville?
“Ashmedai has also requested a demon and Nephilim audit for my region,” Lord Zebulon added. “So I’m going to need your assistance, Evangeline. Assuming you want my help in exonerating Guinevere?”
Eve scoffed and perched on the arm of the couch. “I can exonerate her on my own.”
From my vantage point, still sandwiched between Lord Zebulon and Zane, I could really only see her long, jean-clad legs. But I didn’t need to see her face to know that her shrewd gaze was leveled on Lord Zebulon. Her ability to be so casual and dismissive around the Demonic Lord intrigued me and pained me all at the same time.
Would I ever feel that comfortable with him?
Not likely.
But I longed to.
A forbidden urge, similar to the one that taunted with Zane’s presence.
Maybe I should go feed, I thought, swallowing. I suddenly felt dizzy from their pheromones, my succubus soul awakening with a vengeance.
Zane caught my eye, his expression knowing. Then he glanced to the coffee mug in my hand.Drink, he seemed to be saying. It’ll help.
Or maybe that was just my imagination.
