“Hey you, sorry I missed your calls, baby. I got your texts and called as soon as I could. You straight? What’s up with your pops?” Reggie asked question after question after I answered his call.
When my cell phone rang, I answered the call but was too emotional to speak. Hearing Reggie’s voice was calming, yet I couldn’t stop myself from breaking down. Too much was going on all at the same time making me an emotional wreck.
“Calm down, Tatiana. I’m on my way. Talk to me, baby.”
“He’s in bad shape,” I cried, “My mom hates me, and I just had to physically fight Jamal’s stupid ass and my ex-bestie Trista here at the hospital.
I’m alone and about to lose my fucking mind.
I really didn’t want to call you because I know your baby is coming, but I need you so badly, Reggie.
I can’t handle this shit! It’s too much,” I continued to weep.
I was full-blown crying and shaking from how upset I was.
I legit felt alone, angry, and scared to death all at the same time.
I couldn’t think straight, my head was pounding, and I felt sick to my stomach.
I didn’t know what I was going to do if my dad didn’t make it.
Life without him would be unbearable. I almost wished it were my mom that collapsed and not my dad.
“The fuck you mean you been physically fightin’ and who the fuck is Jamal?”
“A bum that won’t catch the clue that I don’t want his ass. He was dude that rudely walked up on us at my birthday dinner when we were talking. He came up to the hospital clowning in front of my mom and all.”
“Wow! Did that nigga put his hands on you?” Reggie roared.
It felt good having someone on my side. My mom had me feeling like a damn outcast and Jamal and Trista had me feeling blue as hell.
Reggie, however, made me feel like he was genuinely concerned and cared about me.
I could tell he was pissed about me fighting with Jamal.
I hoped he was pissed enough to want to kick his ass.
Since Jamal thought it was okay to do wrong by me, I was gon’ see to it that he got his.
Jamal never laid a finger on me; I was the aggressor hands down, and he deserved it.
I just wasn’t about to let Reggie know that.
Reggie was making me feel like I was a priority in his life and that he cared about what I was going through.
“We were straight going at it. He got put out by security then not even five minutes later, I turn my back to conduct business with the doctor for my dad, and when I turned back around Trista was on her cell cup-caking with his ass. Her fake ass came to chill with me, whole time she was sleeping with the enemy. That’s how he knew where I was from the jump.
I’m telling you, today has been a day from hell! Definitely one for the books.”
“Damn Tati, I hate to hear you goin’ through all that. Just hold tight, I’m not too far from you.”
“Okay.”
“That Trista chick don’t sound too much like a friend to me.”
“She’s not. She’s who you saw him with last night. I had to whoop her ass just to let her know I didn’t play that shit. Enough about those two bums. What happened with your baby? What did she have?” I sniffled as I tried to calm myself down. I was still very upset.
“She wasn’t in labor for real. When I got to the hospital it was a false alarm.”
“Oh, wow!” I sniffled.
“Right, same thing I said. Like you said, enough about all that. My focus is you and your focus should be calming down. Stop crying, baby, I’m getting off the E-way now. I feel so bad, man. Do you need me to bring you something?”
“I just need you here with me.”
“What’s the deal with you and your mom?”
“She’s blaming me for my dad being sick. Talking about I stress them out. My dad had a heart attack and a stroke. Like it’s a very high chance he might die and she’s blaming me. What kind of mom does that!”
“Try not to think negative. What did the doctor say?”
“The heart attack was caused by some blockage that they were able to fix in surgery thank God. The stroke is a different story. Right now, it’s too soon to tell, but his condition is critical.
He’s in ICU, hooked up to a bunch of machines looking weak.
I’ve never seen my daddy looking that close to death ever in my life! ”
“You got to calm yourself down, baby. Ain’t no sense in you gettin’ yourself all upset like that ‘cause what good is it going to do? You can’t be there for your pops if you become unhinged and lose your mind, now can you?”
“No,” I pouted.
“Where your mom at now? Is she straight? Do she need anything?”
“Fuck her! She’s with her friend Chelle. They walked off somewhere.”
“Damn Tati, chill, baby girl.”
“I’m so serious. That lady put her hands on me this morning. That’s the real reason why my dad was upset.”
“You just been fightin’ everybody today. Don’t try my ass. That wouldn’t be a good idea,” Reggie joked. I knew he was trying to lighten the mood.
When he said he was getting off the expressway, that meant it would be any minute before he pulled up.
I headed to the emergency room entrance and looked out the front entrance window as I waited for him.
While I waited, I filled him in on more of the details about all that had transpired with my mom and Jamal’s snitching ass.
It was embarrassing as hell because I was a whole grown ass adult being treated like a kid.
Right as my mom and Chelle approached the front door heading back from the parking lot, Reggie pulled up.
“Shit, here comes the spawn of Satan,” I huffed.
“Who?”
“My mom. Is that you pulling up?”
“Yep. You want me to come in?”
“Here I come.”
When my mom noticed me standing at the entrance she waited outside as I left out of the revolving doors.
“Where you goin’?” my mom asked.
“I’m leaving.” I smirked.
She was all tight lipped with me earlier but was now all up in my business. The woman irked my nerves to the point of no return on purpose I believe.
“Uht, where you goin’? You rode with me.” My mom rebutted, and just as she said that she turned and saw Reggie. He had just walked from around the driver’s side of his Telluride to open the passenger door for me.
“Hello, Mrs. Nelson, I’m sorry to hear about your husband.”
“Really, Tatiana! Your father is laid up in the hospital and you off to go lay up with one of your pimps.”
“Huh? Pimping her! With all due respect, ma’am. I’m not pimping your daughter,” Reggie rebutted.
“I wasn’t talking to you! Mind your business!” My mom rudely spat. “How old are you anyway? You ought to be ashamed of yourself.”
“For what, lady?” Reggie defended. He sounded highly irritated, and I didn’t blame him.
“Again, with all due respect. As of yesterday, Tatiana turned twenty. I’m only a few years older than her.
The Whyte Hotel is my shit. I own that. I don’t need to pimp your daughter or anyone else’s just to be clear.
I get you being emotional and all because of your husband but don’t bring all that attitude this way. I ain’t do anything to you.”
“You ain’t got to clear up shit for me and me and my emotions over my husband has nothing to do with you!
Ray Charles can see you’re way out of my daughter’s league, and that’s the whole point.
She can’t do shit for you but wet your lil’ pecker between your legs.
How did you meet her anyway? Oh wait, let me guess, on her OnlyFans page, huh? ”
“Reggie, you don’t have to answer her. Mom, please! Chill out!”
“Far from a pecker, my lady,” he rebutted. Shaking his head and chuckling he opened the passenger side door so that I could get in.
“Spare me the details!” my mom rebutted.
“Ma please!” I pleaded. “Babe, let’s go.” I said, getting in the passenger seat, trying to close the door.
“Tanya, let her be. Emotions are high and now isn’t the time. Come on, let’s get ready to go,” Chelle requested and surprisingly my mom obliged.
I couldn’t do anything but lay my head back on the headrest and sulk. Reggie quickly got in the driver’s seat and pulled off, the whole time holding my hand. The affectionate gesture made me emotional.
“It’s gon’ be okay, baby. Don’t cry. I’m here with you now,” he tried to console. “Come on, let’s get you something to eat. I gotta get you away from all this negative energy and conflict. I see what you mean about your mom. She a handful.”
“See what I mean. I really need to figure some things out ‘cause there’s no way I can stay in that house with her. My parents gifted me a condo, but my mom reneged and took it back. She said that I was too irresponsible to stay there. Talking about, she don’t want me turning it into a whore house.”
“Not a whore house! Wow!”
“Exactly! My freaking head is pounding. Let’s stop talking about that lady please.”
“You’re welcomed to stay at the hotel for as long as you need to. I can even get you your own suite if you want more privacy.”
“Thank you! I appreciate that because Lord knows I’m not trying to be at the house with her.”
“Let’s go get you something to eat. Your head probably hurt ‘cause you stressin’. Just lay back and relax, baby girl. I gotchu.”
Reggie turned the radio up and the smooth melodies of Acquainted by The Weekend flowed through the Bose speakers throughout his car. Reaching over, he took my hand into his and held it as I closed my eyes and became one with the music.
