Page 117 of Obeying Mr Kingsley
“Pushing it, Grant. You’ve already asked for the weekend off.I should fire your ass,” Sam replies.
“Fire her,” Mason mumbles, tossing back the last of his whisky.“She’s terrible.”
“You.Shut it,” I snap, then turn back to Sam.“I’ll be back in tomorrow and make up for it next week.I promise.”
I am lying.
I won’t be coming back.
I fly out Monday after the wedding. However, Friday is payday, and I need to work the next few days to get a decent final paycheck and tips.
Especially as I’m losing a few hours tonight.
“Fine.Go,” Sam says, then calls out to one of the other girls and tells her she’s helping close the bar tonight.
I ignore the irritated look she throws my way and grab my things, then meet Mason at the door.
As expected, his car and driver are outside waiting.I climb in the back seat, his hand on the small of my back sending shivers down my spine, then he joins me.
I let out a long sigh as the car pulls away from the curb.
Neither of us says anything.
“You’re mad.I understand.”Mason lays his arm along the leather of the door and looks more tense than I’ve ever seen him.
Is he nervous?
“I’m a little creeped out, if I’m honest. Also, I can’t believe Zander went along with it.”
“I coerced him.”
I turn, and he shakes his head, telling me there will be no explanation for that.
I push the bag I’m holding onto the floor and turn his way a little more.“You know you don’t have to look after me.Is this because I’m alone here?Do you feel responsible?”
He doesn’t look at me.
I place my hand on his arm.“Guilt because you took my job away?”
“You quit.”
“You were going to fire me.”
“Maybe if you’d told me what happened in London, we could’ve resolved it,” he hisses.
“Legally, I can’t.”I huff.“What they did...never mind.”
Mason glares at me; emotion rich in his eyes.
He cares.
I’m a little surprised that he’s letting down his guard, but it doesn’t change anything.I’m still leaving. He will never love a girl like me, unlike Sebastian and Emily.Mason was right that first time—he’s not my prince.
We’re silent for the rest of the drive.
When we climb out and Mason starts to follow me upstairs, I turn, glance up at his handsome face and shake my head.
He plunges his hands into his pockets and rocks back on his feet.
