The following week, after the tamest bachelorette party I’ve ever attended, because Emily is pregnant and suffering from delayed morning sickness, I arrive at On The Rocks and head behind the bar like I do every night.

I’m starting to know the regular patrons and getting my groove in this job, so cast my eyes around the room to see who we have in tonight.It’s Tuesday, one of our slower nights.

I spot the two men who have sat at the same table every night for the past week.There’s something strange about them.

“You think they’re gangsters?”I ask Sam, wiping the bar.

Dressed in three-piece suits and tweed caps, they look like they belong in thatPeaky Blindersshow orThe Godfather.

“I think they’re paying customers, so I don’t care,” he mutters.

“Wait, are there Italian gangs in New York?Like real ones?”I turn to him, shocked.

Sam snorts.“Of course there are.Why, are you thinking of changing careers?”

Sam hates me.Actually, Sam hates everyone.He particularly hates me because I only worked half of Saturday night.He’s going to hate me more when I suddenly quit and leave the country.

I roll my eyes.“No.Ilovebeing a bartender.”

He lifts his brow at me, which I ignore.

“Come on, Sam, don’t you think the two of them look suspicious?Who wears dark sunglasses inside a dimly lit bar?Both with big fat mustaches.Seems...weird.”

The bow tie.

Who wears a bow tie?

“Paying customers.I don’t care if they wear dresses.”Sam wanders off, and I shoot the men another look.

Susie, one of the servers who works that area, delivers them more drinks and takes their tip.

My eyes narrow as I wipe the bar over and over when one of the men lifts his face and glances my way.
