“It’s already four in the morning, I have to go.”
I tried to move my body to let him get up from the bed and realized I was exhausted. With what little strength I had left, I got up and put back on the silk robe that was on the floor.
“I’m going to use the bathroom,” he informed me, and headed to the en-suite bathroom in my bedroom, taking his clothes with him.
I sat on the bed, not believing I had had sex with William Cavaller—and what sex! And the best part was that it seemed I was going to enjoy it for a while.
Congratulations, Devon!, I told myself
When he came out of the bathroom, he was already dressed except for his jacket.
“Will you walk me to the door?” he asked, picking up the tuxedo jacket that had been left on the floor.
“Yes, of course.”
“You have my phone number on the card I gave you, call me.”
“Alright,” I said.
When we reached the front door, he took me by the waist and kissed me, then rested his forehead against mine.
“Call me,” he repeated.
“I will.”
He let me go and left.
At that moment I realized he had never asked for my phone number nor said that he would call me; perhaps he was leaving it up to me to decide whether we would see each other again or not. I sighed and went back to the bedroom to take a long shower. I still couldn’t process that I had had that man in my bed and that we’d had amazing sex, but I felt euphoric in a way I hadn’t felt in a long time. May God help me keep my mind clear and my heart closed because I intended to enjoy what William Cavaller was offering, which so far had been spectacular.
Four days later I still hadn’t called him, nor had I received any news from him. In my case, it was because I didn’t want to seem desperate to see him again and because I found it uncomfortable to be the one taking the initiative since I had never done something like that before, although I must confess I was a bit anxious to meet with him again.
That night I was with Sylvia and Orson because we had made plans to have dinner together and perhaps afterward, if we weren’t too tired, go to the nightclub on the floor above the restaurant itself. I had worked many hours, but I was also determined to have fun with my friends. I went into my closet and started looking through my clothes, finally settling on a black jumpsuit with wide-leg pants and a crossed halter neckline. The back was open, giving it an elegant and sensual touch. I paired it with platform sandals. I left my hair loose and applied natural-looking makeup.
At nine o’clock I was entering the restaurantArôme Exquis, an elegant and exclusive restaurant in the city located on Montevideo’s promenade. I asked for the table reserved under Mr. Araoz’s name and was escorted to a table on the restaurant’s terrace. From there, one had a privileged view of the promenade and could enjoy the sea breeze and the spectacular starry night. My friends were already waiting for me, enjoying a drink and chatting animatedly. Sylvia was a beautiful girl with straight black hair and dark eyes that gave her an exotic and attractive appearance. She was a bit shorter than me, but still tall and had a natural elegance.
“Devon!” Sylvia shouted, waving her hand as soon as she saw me.
I approached them and we greeted each other with a warm hug.
“How wonderful to see you both. I saw Orson a few days ago, but I haven’t seen you in quite a while,” I said, greeting Sylvia.
“Our schedules are complicated. Luckily I’m off tomorrow, otherwise I wouldn’t have come. It’s hard for me to face a workday if I’m not well-rested.”
“You two sound like grandmothers! Where’s the youth, beauties?” Orson joked. “Instead of taking advantage of the beauty God gave you, you live locked up in your homes or at work. What a waste!”
“Oh, shut up!” Sylvia exclaimed, looking at Orson with a frown.
I laughed and, after sitting down, we began to chat about what we had been doing in recent days. We enjoyed an exquisite dinner and each other’s company and conversation. At that moment, the waiter was approaching with our desserts.
“Well, what shall we do? Should we go to the club?” Orson asked.
“I’d like to,” Sylvia said. “What do you think, Devon?”
Just as I was about to respond, I saw William Cavaller enter with a very striking woman hanging on his arm. The woman was talking to him and smiling, and he was looking at her with seriousness and great attention. I was sure he hadn’t seen me yet, but I wouldn’t escape his notice because they took a table across from ours. My heart began to beat very quickly. The feeling of seeing him with another woman was not pleasant at all; I felt a discomfort in my chest and such great disappointment that it was difficult to hide. I wasn’t prepared for these emotions I was feeling. We hadn’t promised each other anything; it was clear that ours was just an affair that resembled more that of lovers than a couple, but it bothered me to see him with that woman. I didn’t understand why it affected me somuch, but the unease was significant. I supposed it was logical that it bothered me because a few days ago I had slept with him—I wouldn’t be human if it didn’t bother me, right?
“Devon,” Sylvia called, because I assumed they had said something and were waiting for my answer.
My face must have fallen because they were both looking at me with bewilderment.
