Page 23 of My Heart's Doctor
“As I mentioned to you, Dr. Dulcet came to visit today, but Aurora wanted her to read the story she brought as a gift, and no one could convince her otherwise. The doctor was truly exhausted because her workday had been extremely long. I suppose that’s why she fell asleep. I felt bad about waking her after the effort she made to come without having rested enough. I apologize.”
“You don’t need to apologize. I’m grateful to the doctor for being so attentive to my daughter. Don’t worry, I’ll take care of waking her, and given the hour, I’ll suggest she stay in one of the guest bedrooms,” I stated.
Alba looked at me as if I had lost my mind. Why couldn’t I be kind to someone who had been caring toward my daughter? If I were honest, I had to admit that this behavior was strange for me. I never had this type of attitude with people I didn’t know, much less allowed them to stay in my house. I also imagined that was why Alba had become so nervous when she saw me in the bedroom.
“Go rest, Alba. See you tomorrow,” I said goodbye, because I wanted her to leave so I could return to the bedroom.
“Do you need anything?” she asked, still looking at me with surprise, but I didn’t care.
“No, thank you. See you tomorrow,” I repeated, so she would leave once and for all.
“See you tomorrow, sir. And... good luck with Miss Devon,” she said, and it seemed to me she said it with a double meaning.
Could it be that Alba was suggesting I had some kind of romantic interest in Devon?
“Good luck?”
“To convince her to stay,” she said with a mischievous smile, “I don’t think it will be easy.”
“I’m not going to force her; if she doesn’t want to stay, she can leave,” I stated seriously because I didn’t want Alba to get the wrong idea.
I had no romantic interest in Devon Dulcet. Romantic? Of course not!
“Rest well, sir.”
“Good night, Alba.”
I quickly returned to the bedroom and sat down in the armchair again to observe them. Both were still in the same position as before. I had the opportunity to contemplate Devon, and I didn’t waste it. She was truly beautiful. Her delicate face was almost angelic. Her features were exquisite—enormous eyes covered with long lashes, a small upturned nose, and full, sensual lips that invited kisses and that you could also imagine kissing you and licking... I shook my head in denial. This wasn’t the time to imagine such things.
Damn! Just thinking about it had made me hard. I shifted in the chair and continued observing her. That day she was wearing a sleeveless blouse with a slight neckline that revealed the beginning of her breasts, which were the ideal size. Her waist was small, and she had a body with perfect curves. I couldn’t deny that I desired her—any man would desire Devon—but the problem arose because she had becomefriendswith my daughter, which meant she was now completely off-limits.
When I looked at the clock again, I realized it was close to one in the morning. I needed to wake her so she could sleep comfortably, otherwise tomorrow she would have muscle pain throughout her body.
I stood up and sat on the bed, facing her. I couldn’t help stretching out my arm and caressing her bare arm. Her skin was as soft as silk, and I hardened again. This woman drove me completely crazy. I raised my arm and caressed her cheek. I was tempted to caress her lips, but I didn’t. What I did do was call her to try to wake her up.
“Devon.”
She didn’t move a muscle.
“Devon. Devon, wake up.”
Zero response.
“Devon, wake up,” I called, and couldn’t help caressing her cheek again.
Her eyes began to open slowly, and when those gorgeous gray eyes settled on me, I could see the confusion reflected in her face. She paled instantly and blinked several times, I suppose to confirm that I wasn’t a dream or perhaps, for her, a nightmare.
“Mr. Cavaller?” she stammered.
“You fell asleep,” I announced, looking at her calmly.
At that moment she looked at Aurora, and with that look, I could confirm the affection this woman had for my daughter. With extreme delicacy, she separated Aurora from her body and began to move to stand up.
“You don’t need to leave. If you wish, you can stay. We have several guest bedrooms,” I said, taking her by the arm so she wouldn’t leave the bed, because I really wanted her to stay.
“No way, I’m leaving now. I apologize, I was reading her a book and must have fallen asleep. What time is it?” she asked, and I could notice her nervousness.
“One in the morning.”
