Damn it, I wanted to shove a pencil through his eye.
"Me in exchange for letting the Rossi's and omegas you have in your possession go. Or scheduled to be within the next seventy-two hours." There. I said it. I was standing my ground and wouldn't back down.
"You vastly overestimate your worth," he chuckled. "But I'll indulge you as I do want to tie up this loose end. Bring me something to take down KDC, and we have a deal." KDC was Elias, Simon, Xavier, and Julian's company. How was I supposed to get something to bring them down? Fuck, this was a complication I hadn't expected.
"Fine," I snapped as I ran my hand through my hair in agitation. I'd figure something out, even if I had to beg Alena to help me to find him so we could bring down his organization once and for all. My family had traumatized too many omegas, and it was time to put this to an end.
"Very good. You have forty-eight hours."
The phone disconnected without another word, and I sagged back against the cool porcelain of the toilet.
What the fuck had I gotten myself into?
* * *
Fingertips glided along my cheek, and I groaned, swatting them away. "Not time yet," I grumbled.
Lucas chuckled. "Wake up, sleepy head. Alena and the guys are coming over for brunch. I figured you want to be there."
I blinked rapidly, waking myself up and stretching my arms and legs out. "Yep, sounds good." I yawned again.
Ugh, why was I so tired? Oh, that's right. I didn't get any sleep because I was too busy worrying about how I was gonna get to my brother and give him something to bring down Elias.
"Come down when you're ready, darlin'." He winked, kissed my lips briefly, and left me alone to get up and get dressed.
The less time I spent around them, the better. I was a horrible liar, especially with people I loved. A stranger? No problem. My horrid family? Also easy.
But looking someone you loved in the face when you were being less than truthful was the full measure of someone's heart.
We were going to see how I'd handle it today.
Because there was no way I was going to let innocent people suffer when I was able to do something about it.
Hopefully, the guys would come to forgive me. If I made it out of there alive.
I managed to get up and dressed, throwing my hair up in a messy ponytail and skipping any makeup. The more I thought over things, the more I realized I was going to need Alena's help with this whole crazy ass plan. If my instincts were correct, she was someone of great integrity who would do the same if in a similar situation.
The first thing I did when I got down to the kitchen was get coffee.
“You okay, baby girl?” James wrapped his arms around me from behind, and I relaxed into him.
“Just really tired.” I sighed and took a sip of coffee. “Worried about everything, and it’s messing with me.”
“You tossed and turned a lot last night,” he remarked almost absently.
I nodded. “It was a rough night. I’m sorry if I kept you up.” I turned in his arms to kiss him.
He brushed a strand of hair away from my face and shook his head. “I never sleep all that well, even with you in my arms. Next time, just talk to me. I’m sure I can find a way to exhaust you enough to sleep.”
Heat filled my face as I giggled. Somehow, I was able to push away the thoughts of my brother.
Even if it was only for a little while.
Brunch was amazing. The banter and humor between everyone combined with Lucas' amazing food, was the perfect mix for the perfect meal.
It brought tears to my eyes, knowing that this may be the last time. I didn't know if the guys would forgive me for leaving, but I had to ensure my brother was stopped.
No more omegas should ever have to go through what myself, Alena, or the rest of them had. If there was something that I could do, I would do it.
