Finally, Lyn reached out for my gun. I tried to wrestle it away from her, but she was quick. I dodged to the side, expecting her to fire it at me, but instead, she buried the barrel into her mouth and fired, splattering her head all over my carpet.
“Yeah,” Devrick said. “That’s what I was afraid of.”
I whipped around and started towards him, but he quickly backed out of the room and closed the door. I wrapped my fist around it and started to yank it open, but Devrick was trying with all his might to hold it shut.
“Let me out!” I roared.
“You need to calm down first!”
I was stronger than Devrick, there was no question, and each time I pulled on the door, it gave a little more until he used all of his weight to slam it shut again. “Devrick!”
“Vincent! You’re not going to be of any help to anyone like that. You need to calm down!”
“Don’t tell me to calm down!” I pulled so hard that the door handle splintered the wood around it and eventually popped right out, sending shards of wood onto the ground. I stuck my hand into the opening and wrenched the door open, and Devrick backed up against the wall on the other end of the hallway. I took a step out into the hallway.
And totally broke down.
My nose started to burn and my eyes were filling up with tears. There was a painful lump right in my throat. All I could think about was my beautiful wife and my sweet son out there in the world thinking that I’d betrayed them and let them down.
And they’d be right.
“He’s out there looking for her,” I said softly to Devrick, who was now looking at me like he’d seen a ghost. A tear fled down my cheek and I said, “Dev. I need your help. I need you to find my wife.”
“Okay, Vince.” he held out his hands for me. “Don’t worry, we’re going to find her. We’re going to find herandSascha. Don’t worry.”
“No, you don’t understand,” I whined. “They’re in danger. He’s after them, and if this isn’t really about Katya, when she refuses to give him what he’s looking for, whatever it is, he’ll k—” I couldn’t even get the word out. I’d never cried in my entire life, at least not that I could remember. I’d nearly died a dozen times. Married the love of my life. Watched the birth of my son, but I just wasn’t a crier. Not until now. Not until I could feel my entire world crumbling down around me. Not until I started to imagine Katya—my beautiful Katya—lying dead on some concrete floor. “Devrick, you gotta help me. You gotta find my family.”
“Yeah.” He walked me back into my room and guided me to sit down on my bed. “We’re gonna. We’re gonna find them.”
“My wife, Devrick,” I whimpered as if repeating it would somehow help. “My wife needs us. She needs me.”
“I know.” He pulled his phone out of his pocket. “I know. We’re gonna do everything we can. We’re going to work around the clock until we find her, okay? You don’t have to worry. Katya’s strong, remember? Remember what we saw yesterday? She defeated him once before, she can do it again.”
“He’s gonna try and kill her, Dev.” I shook my head at him. “Please. Please we have to find her.”
Devrick pressed a few buttons on his phone while simultaneously rubbing my back. My mind was going crazy imagining what Antonio might be doing to Katya or what he could really be looking for. Katya was specifically trained by her fathernotto give in to torture, so she wouldn’t go down without a fight, but if he had our son too, whoknewwhat might happen. If Antonio caught them, he would have the one thing that could potentially make Katya dowhateverhe told her to do.
And what he might tell her to do was terrifying me too much to think about.
“Mario,” Devrick said into his phone. “Get Annie and come up to Vincent and Katya’s bedroom right away. We have a problem.” Then he looked down at me. “Actually… we have more than one problem.”
