I stepped out of the car, and realized in an instant that I’d have to tell Annie she was right. Walking towards me, with a look of intrigue on his face, was Antonio.

“So,” I said. “You’re The King?”

“Perhaps,” he replied. “Clever disguise you’ve got there, Mrs. Costello. Fooled my guys easy.”

“And yet here you are,” I responded.

He chuckled. “You do clean work, I’ll admit, but when my guards outside The Drug Store told me that no one came in after you, I sent someone to check on David, and found him in quite the terrible situation. Checked my cameras to see who had last entered, and youalmosttricked me with the different wig and eyes. If I hadn’t met you at the cleaners, you might have been successful.”

I was rapidly learning that, regardless of what those below him had going on, Antonio was perhaps a bit more organized and powerful than he was letting on. “Lesson learned.” I clenched my gun tightly, prepared for a fight if that’s what it came to. “So, am I going to have to fight my way out of here?”

“On the contrary,” Antonio said, giving me a slick smile. “I’d like to invite you to be my queen.”
