I threw the gun up and pointed it right at his face. “Move.”

He slid to the side and I walked in, quickly making my way down to Lyn’s cell. She hadn’t touched the food that was still a mess on the floor, and was lying on the cot, poking her finger through the air like she was counting the speckles in the drywall on the ceiling.

I slammed my gun against the glass, jumping her to attention, then I motioned for her to get up. Immediately, she went into a panic, shaking her head and begging for her life. When I started to enter the code in the keypad that would unlock her cell, she started to cower into the corner. I walked in with my gun and then shut the door behind us, preventing either of us from leaving.

“Hello, little girl,” I said with my voice darker than sin. “YourKingattacked one of our men today. You wouldn’t happen to know anything about that, would you?”

“No, I swear. I’ve been here with you! How would I know that?!” she yelped.

I pointed to my stomach. “I’ve had this feeling in my gut for a long time now, one that I simply can’t shake. Like someone is pissing on my leg and telling me it’s raining, you know what I mean?” Lyn shook her head and just cowered even further back from me, forcing herself as deep into the corner of the cell as she could go. “I thought maybe Antonio just predicted that you would run your mouth because you’re innocent and naive, but this attack confirms it, Antonio doesn’t leaveanythingup to chance. It’s not just about smart or stupid. His attention to detail is too good. He wouldn’t risk us finding you, risk us not killing you, and risk you telling us specific information. Today’s attack shows that he thinks days, weeks, monthsin advance.” I pulled up my gun and pointed it at Lyn’s head. “So now you’re going to tell me everything you know, for real this time, and then if I believe you, I’ll consider not blowing your brains out.”

Lyn’s eyes widened and she looked at me like she was going to cry. “I don’t think—”

“Knock it off. I know what this gut feeling is now. Why I saw myself in you. It’s not because of your upbringing, it’s because you’re as much of a snake as I am. You can drop your little innocent girl act. Tell me who you really are, and why you’re really here.”

Suddenly, Lyn’s cowering stopped. She looked me up and down and then let out a sigh. “Fine, I guess you caught me.” That innocent, young tone of voice was gone now, in the interest of a rich, mature timber. “I’ll tell you what you want to know, but it won’t matter. Antonio has already decided to destroy Vincent Costello, which means he may as well already be dead.”
