Chapter Twenty-Four: Katya

“Show me everything,” I said.

Giorgio, the head of our security team, was dealing with the reconstruction of the security station after the explosion, so with Kari having arrived for the day to take her shift with Sascha, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to go and see how things were ticking along. I was already starting to get antsy just sitting around doing nothing. Sascha liked Kari a lot, so I didn’t have any intentions to fire her just because I was stepping down from being one of Vincent’s capos.

I assumed that I’d begin to sort of self-form my own responsibilities now that I was staying home all the time, I just had to be patient while things took shape.

One of the things I was more interested in now, however, was the security of our estate. The Wreckers had clearly managed to hack in at some point and track our comings and goings, and when the security station blew up, everything was offline for a while. I sort of wanted to make beefing up security around the estate my personal task, and Devrick was more than happy to get something off his plate, so I was taking it on.

“This is where the new, armored station will go,” Giorgio explained, showing me the foundation where the old security station had been and where the new, larger one would go. We’re also going to make it so that anyone entering or exiting the security station doesn’t have to walk through the gates to do so. We had that one smarmy guy slip through earlier this year.”

“Maksim,” I said, laughing, remembering how he slipped onto the estate to kill Vincent and got a bat to the back from me instead.

“And now that this woman has escaped from the containment unit, I just want to make sure that the only reason to open these gates is if someone who has been thoroughly checked and authorized is leaving or returning.”

“Good,” I said. “I’m going to be putting together some new protocols as well, but I like this. I like the gates not opening each shift change.”

“Yes, ma’am. And if you’ll look over here.” He walked me to the edge of the gate and pointed in towards the woods. “We’re putting the backup generator inside the gates as well, and it will be getting its own containment unit as well. We want to ensure that nothing like what happened before can happen again, as well as make sure that, if it does happen again, it’s not so close to the security station that it can cause the kind of damage it did.”

“Very good,” I said, nodding. “Did you look into anti-flammable materials as well?”

“Yes. Both the casing on the actual generator as well as the unit containing it will be anti-flammable. We’ve also secured staff who will come in once a quarter to give all of it a safety check and update anything faulty. We’re sparing no expense to make sure this generator is much safer.” He snickered a little then. “And we’re cutting down some of the surrounding trees as well, because you know, trees plus fire equals…”

“Right.” I put my hands on my hips. “Well this is all really good. Like I said, I’m going to be more involved with security now, so please keep me very well updated on anything that’s going on. I want to see everything, approve everything—be involved every step of the way.”

“Of course ma’am.”

I twisted my neck to the side as a bit of pain started to throb through it, and I set my hand on top of my bandages. “Ow…”

“I mean no disrespect by overstepping, Mrs. Costello, but you are still recovering after all. We’ve been out here for about an hour and it’s cold. I think you should head in and warm up. If you’d like, the two of us can meet tomorrow and I can introduce you to everything we currently have planned to increase security.”

“I’d love that,” I said. “And yes, I think I will head home for the day. Thank you for being so open to the changes.”

He shook his head. “No, thank you. I’m glad one of the heads of the family will be overseeing this directly from now on. It makes me feel better that we’ll get exactly what you’re looking for.”

I nodded and puffed out my chest with pride a little bit. One of the heads of the family, that was me for sure. “Thank you, Giorgio.”

He gave me a shallow bow of respect, then I left him behind to finish his work and made my way back towards the estate proper. Vincent would be working for a bit longer I assumed, trying to figure things out with Lyn and Antonio, but maybe since Kari was in, I could take a nice long bath, enjoy lunch with my mom, and then meet with Vincent to go over security plans in the evening. I hadn’t quite shared with him that I’d decided just in the past couple of hours to throw myself into the thick of it with the security stuff, but I had no doubt he’d be supportive. He knew how important it was to me to make sure everyone was safe, and if I knew our security system like the back of my hand, I’d be far better equipped to do that.

I thought about going to Vincent’s office to see him first, but then I remembered that we were trying to create new boundary lines in our lives right now and thought better of it. He’d come home soon enough and we could talk about everything. I’d miss him until then, but I could wait. I wasn’t an animal…

…at least I wouldn’t be until he came home.

Snickering at my own naughty thoughts, I set a course for the bedroom so that I could start my afternoon with my bath. I could hear Kari playing with Sascha in his room, and he tended to get fussy when he saw me and wanted my attention, so I decided to let them be for now.

I opened the door to my bedroom, and froze, actually dropping my phone.

Vincent was in our bed, naked, fuckingsome woman from behind.

“Oh my god!” I screamed.

Vincent looked over at me, gave me a confused look, and then skittered backwards off the bed until he fell flat on his back. I wasn’t sure who this woman was that he was with, some dark-haired person that I’d never seen before, but it really didn’t matter.

She wasn’t me, so why did my husband have his dick inside of her?!

“Kat!” he yelled. “I thought this was you!”

“What?!” I yelled. “Is that how little you know about me that you thought some other woman was me?!”
