A small smile crossed her face. “Is it stupid that sounds really nice?”

I laughed. “No. That’s not stupid.” I set a hand on her head. “Can I get you anything right now?”

She nodded. “My son.”

“Okay. I’ll be right back.” I stood up and gave her a gentle kiss, then walked out of the room.

I looked to the right towards Sascha’s room, but then I looked to the left. I had every intention of not working for the next week to take care of Katya, but there was one thing I wanted to do first. One thing I had to do, for me, for my wife, and for my family.

I needed an answer.

Quickly making my way out of the house and down to the containment unit, I entered and went down to Lyn’s cell. She was sitting on the floor working on the meal she’d recently been given, but stopped when she noticed me.

She gave me a sweet smile and said, “Hi Vincent.”

“I need to know Ant’s end game. I need to know if I should be afraid?” Saying the words was foreign to me. There wasn’t much I feared, but seeing Katya all bandaged up was like my greatest nightmare realized. If this guy was capable of hurting my family to this degree, then Iwasafraid of him. “What does he want? It can’t just be Katya.”

“That’s it,” she said. “I’m sure he wouldn’t mind killing you, but she’s his goal.” She stood up and walked up to the glass and set her hands on it. “You should just let her go and take me instead.”

“What does he want with her? Does he think she has some unique skill? Is he trying to use her family’s name to create fear in Europe? I don’t get it?”

“No, at least not that he’s shared with me,” Lyn said. “I know I haven’t been entirely truthful with you, but Antonio believes he is entitled to everything perfect in this world. Anything truly beautiful, expensive, or perfect in his eyes, he thinkshe’sthe one who should have it. Your wife, as ungrateful as she is, exceeds even Ant’s standards for beauty and he won’t settle until she’s his.”

“I’m not going to let that happen,” I said.

She shrugged at me. “You don’t have much say over the matter. I’ve never seen Ant not get what he wants.”

“He’ll get my wife over my dead body,” I growled back.

An evil smile crossed Lyn’s face and she looked me right in the eyes. “Be careful what you wish for.”
