“Hopefully, they’re headed to four-ninety-five. We’ll get a clear shot of them from the on-ramp there,” Derrika said.

That was if they didn’t make me before then and keep to back roads.

“Got a call coming in,” Zane announced and disconnected.

“Is the word ‘goodbye’ not in his vocabulary?”

I smiled at Derrika’s disgruntled tone. “You heard him earlier. He’s not a man to waste time,” I reminded her.

“Unless he’s talking about pussy,” she mumbled.

My shoulders rocked with the chuckle that tore from my chest.

“You have a great laugh.”

Fuck me .

I didn’t know what to say to that but I sure as fuck knew how to feel. I let her off-handed compliment scorch through me before I refocused on the road.

“Can I ask you something?”

My neck started to itch. No good ever came from a woman asking if she could ask something instead of just coming out and asking.

“Sure.”

“You don’t sound sure,” she noted. “You sound like you’re preparing to have your fingernails pulled out.”

“I’m as sure as I can be when all men know ‘can I ask a question’ is the runner-up to a woman saying, ‘I’m fine.’ The former means entrapment, the latter means we fucked up and better move to fix it or all hell’s gonna break loose.”

“You’re probably not wrong on either account,” she muttered. “But you should know I’ve already prepared myself for not liking your answer.”

Fucking great .

“Ask, Dee Dee.”

There were a few beats of silence, which only made the inching intensify.

“Back in the basement…”

I knew where she was going with her question, still I prompted, “Yeah?”

“You said, either way we were good.”

Right.

Fuck.

She went where I thought she was going.

“I spent a decade overseas,” I started. “That’s not to say I didn’t have sex, I did, but it was rare.

Since I’ve been back, I haven’t abstained.

What I have been is safe. Always. By that I mean, I’ve never had sex without protection.

We also have quarterly physicals. I haven’t been with anyone since. Which means, you’re good on my end.”

“You’re…um…good on my end as well. It’s…um…been awhile. And I’ve never either. That is, I’ve never had unprotected sex.”

Right.

Good we had that covered, but that’s not what she was actually asking about.

“I take it you’re not on birth control.”

“No. But, I…um…ended my period four days ago.”

“Good to know, baby, but still, shit happens. I pulled out, but we both know, shit happens with that too. I’m not that guy.”

The Mercedes made it to the intersection and I slowed down, hoping I got caught at the light. I needed more cars between us and the Merc.

“What kind of guy?”

The light changed to yellow, and much to the irritation of the cars behind me, I rolled to a stop.

“Shouldn’t you have run the light?”

“Calculated risk. There’s not enough traffic to blend in.” I kept my eyes on the Merc and answered her other question. “I’m not the guy who bails. Whatever happens we’re good. Saying that, we’ll be careful next time.”

My phone ringing interrupted our conversation.

Nebraska’s name flashed on the Escalade screen. Derrika beat me to hitting the connect icon. She also beat me to answering.

“Hey,” she greeted. “Did you get anything?”

“Still working on that,” Nebraska responded. “I’m calling to let you know that Kira turned on your work phone. You know, the one Anson gave you.”

“Yeah.”

“She found a tracking app installed.”

I didn’t have to be looking at Derrika to know she’d gone stiff. I could feel her anger filling the cab.

“I checked it.”

“Kira said, you’d say that. She also told me to tell you not to feel bad. She didn’t find it either. Not until she plugged your phone into her fancy-dancy spy computer. She ran some sort of software check and the computer found it.”

Well fuck .

“Since she turned the phone on does that mean the farm has been compromised?” I asked.

“What do you think this is, amateur hour?” Kira yelled.

“Keep your pants on, KK, I was just asking.”

“Don’t start with me, Four, I’m not in the mood.”

“I’ll keep you posted,” Nebraska said, as the light turned green.

With that, she disconnected.

“Seriously, y’all need an employee handbook that outlines phone etiquette,” Derrika grumbled.

“He has one. Though it doesn’t cover phone etiquette,” I told her. “It mostly covers who’s in charge until the mating ritual is complete and covers topics such as proper use of prophylactics.”

“Clearly you skipped that section.”

“No, baby, I memorized that shit. It was seeing you naked while hilariously telling me you’d broken three toes that had me losing my head.

Which was oddly specific but I couldn’t call you out on that because I was distracted by your sweet body.

Then you gave me a two-minute warning your death was imminent, so I was more concerned with performing lifesaving measures than I was finding a condom.

Though, it might make me sound like a complete asshole, but watching you lick my come off your lips was worth breaking the rules.

Adding to that, we’ll be doing that again and often. ”

I felt her eyes on me but didn’t take mine off the road.

My focus was already shit. If I glanced over at her and saw the barest hint she was turned on, Zane’s employee handbook would be the least of my worries.

I’d be facing criminal indecent exposure when I pulled over and fucked her in the back of the company SUV.
