“So, am I ever gonna hear this first episode?” I ask Sabrina as she scribbles furious notes in her yellow legal writing pad. She’s hard at work listening to and revising the first episode of the podcast and I’m eager to hear it.
She looks up at me, a wry smile on her face as she shakes her head. “We’re not ready to share anything with you yet. We want the first episode to be perfect before we let you listen.”
“I don’t think it needs to be perfect,” I say, walking over to her.
I stop next to her and give her the smile that has closed millions of dollars in deals for me, but she just rolls her eyes.
I attempt to peek down at the pad, but she holds her hand up and glares at me.
“Do not even attempt to see what I’m writing and do not even attempt to press play on the recording.
” I shrug as my eyes move away from the digital recorder on the design next to her. “I know you Wes.”
“Come on.” I say, giving her a warm smile. “Just a teensy weensy listen.”
“No, Wes. You know Erica would kill me if I let you listen to it before it was perfect.”
“Well, I don’t want her to do that.” I say with a half-smile. “I kinda care what happens to you.”
“Kinda?”
“Come here,” I open my arms up and usher her to me.
Sometimes I just want to hold her. Holding her next to me is a feeling that I will never get over.
I watch as she stands up and walks over to me, her hips sashaying gently.
She looks up at me with wide eyes, “I love you. You know that.”I pull her into my arms, my heart racing as she stares at me.
“I love you, too. More than anything in this whole world.” She leans closer to me, and I wrap my arms around her waist, bringing her in towards my body. “Shall I tell you how many ways I love you?” I say, pressing my lips against hers.
“Not if that’s your way of telling me that you want to make love right now.” She says, giggling softly as she touches the side of my face. “You know, I’m working right now, Wes. I don’t have time to pleasure you or myself.”
“Fine then.” I pout like a petulant kid and she laughs. “You go ahead and work while I sit in the living room on my lonesome and watch TV and feel bored and just think about how much I love you.”
“I’m pretty confident that you have other things to do. You are the new Wolf of Wall Street, right?” She giggles. “You run a billion-dollar corporation. I think there’s plenty of things that you could be reading up on or thinking about, asides from me.”
“Are you telling me you shouldn’t be the absolute apple of my eye? The focus of my life.”
She laughs again. “I think that would be quite toxic and unhealthy if I was the only thing you ever thought about.”
“Then I suppose I’m toxic and unhealthy.” I say dramatically.
She pushes me away lightly. “You’re too much, Wes.”
“What, just because I love you so?”
“I love you too.” She kisses me again. “But I’m working.”
“Fine. So, have you spoken to Erica about moving in with us again?”
“I have. But I don’t know that she wants to.” She lets out a deep sigh. “I think it would be absolutely amazing. And, I mean, it’s something we’ve always talked about upon graduating.”
“She didn’t expect me to be in the mix though, did she?” I say, shaking my head.
“No, I think she is still a little bit taken aback by the fact that we’re together and she and I are not going to be living our best Sex in the City lives, navigating the bars and the streets of New York looking for hot men.”
“Well, I’m glad you’re not doing that. And I sure hope that my little sister is not going to be doing that.” I frown. “I don’t want any men taking advantage of her?”
“I mean, she has two older brothers and you guys had friends. She knows something about men.”
“She is as wide eyed and bushy tailed as you are. You know that.” I stare at Sabrina for a couple of moments. “I don’t want my little sister strutting her stuff around New York City. I don’t want her to get hurt.”
“What does that mean?” Sabrina puts her hands on her hips. “I know you’re not being a hypocrite. I know you just didn’t say?—”
“My bad.” I say quickly. “I didn’t mean to be a hypocrite She can do whatever she wants.
It’s her body. I want her to have fun. I just don’t want her to get hurt or used or, you know.
She’s a Carrington. And once people realize she’s related to THE Carrington’s, a lot of horrible men are going to come out of the woodwork.
” I sigh. “But I suppose it’s not really my business to say anything, is it? ”
“No, it’s not. She has to learn and she has to be able to do what she wants to do.
” Sabrina offers me a small smile. “I know you love her, and you and Miles are great big brothers but it’s not like you guys have been celibate and single your entire lives.
You guys have dated around. And I’m sure there have been plenty of women who have only wanted you because?—”
“Because I’m so good looking.” I say.
She rolls her eyes.
“Because I’m charismatic.”
“Yeah, keep telling yourself that.” She giggles.
“Because I’m intelligent and witty.”
“Because you have money.” she interrupts me. “You’re a billionaire, and those in the know cannot resist that. I mean, that’s why you had so many thousands of women calling you, who are still calling, you know.”
I glare at her. “Thanks to you.”
“I’m sorry a million times. I’m sorry.”
“I’m joking,” I say grasping her hands and squeezing tightly. “In fact, I think that’s the best thing you’ve ever done in your life.”
“What creating that flyer?” she asked me surprised.
“Yeah, if you hadn’t created the flyer saying I was looking for a wife, then I never would have had to have made you live with me and answer the calls and?—”
“And we wouldn’t be together right now?” she says.
“Something like that. Though I would like to believe eventually we would have come together in some way.”
“I mean, maybe.” she shrugs. “I tried last year, but?—”
“But we both know why that was not a good option. But you do know that you’re the one for me, right? You do know that you’re my soulmate and I’ll love you forever.”
“I know because I love you forever, too. You know what I was thinking?” she says, tilting her head to the side, a glint in her eyes.
“No, what?”
“Well, I was thinking that perhaps we could maybe have a party?”
“Okay, I guess.”
“And you could invite all the nice, handsome single men that you know.”
“Where are you going with this?” I ask her suspiciously.
“And then, we have Erica come over and see?—”
“Nope.” I shake my head. “Not gonna happen.”
“What youmean?”
“I mean, I don’t have any nice single friends, that I think would be good for Erica.”
“You don’t have any nice single, good looking friends?” She rolls her eyes. “Really? I mean, I’ve met some of them already.”
“You have?” I glare at her. “Who’d you consider to be good looking?”
“Well, if I told you that--” she winks.
“Sabrina Filmore, you tell me right now, which one of my friends do you consider to be good looking?”
“Why are you gonna stop being friends with them?”
“Maybe.” I chuckle. “Or maybe I just won’t invite them over ever again.”
“Oh my gosh, stop being such an idiot, Wes Carrington.”
I stare at her for a couple of moments. “Look, I love my friends. I think they’re great. But I don’t know that any of them are good enough for Erica. She needs a decent guy. She needs someone that is not super experienced, is not gonna try and—” I pause.
“Try and what?” Sabrina says, glancing at me with an innocent expression.
“You know.” I say, staring at her blanking. Not wanting to get myself into trouble again.
“No, tell me you don’t want them trying to do what?”
“I don’t want them trying to bed my little sister. There are a lot of men out there who are only interested in—” I sigh. “Do we have to talk about this right now?”
“I guess not.” Sabrina says, shaking her head. “But I would like to help Erica find someone. I know she wants to be in love just as much as I do.”
“Yeah. Well, when the time is right, it will happen. I mean, next thing you’re gonna say, you want to hook up Miles as well.”
Sabrina just stares at me. “I feel like he’s gonna be a bachelor for life.” she says lightly, and then shakes her head. “Anyway, get out of here. I need to work.”
“But I don’t want you to work. You’ve been working for the last couple of hours.”
“That’s why it’s called work. And you want to listen to this episode soon, right?”
“Well, yeah.”
“And so, if I’m not working getting it ready, it’s gonna take even longer. Plus, Erica is coming over tomorrow, and she wants us to do an interview with this author that’s written a book about?—”
I hold up my hands. “Is this another romance book?”
“Yeah, and?”
“I think that I’ll just wait to hear more about it in the podcast.”
She burst out laughing. “Really?”
“What? What can I say? I’ve heard more than enough romance books in the last week than I have ever wanted to know.”
“Maybe you should read one.”
I stare at her. “You’re kidding, right? Why would I read one?”
“Maybe you would happen to like it?”
“I think I’m okay. You know, when I read, I like to read sci fi.”
“Uh huh. What’s wrong with a little sci fi and romance together?”
“Sci fi and romance?” I wrinkle my nose. “I’m not even sure what that would be.”
“Well, there are lots of alien romance books.” she says, looking excited. “In fact, there’s this whole trope about aliens coming down from space to kidnap women, to take them back to space so that they can help them populate their planet.”
My jaw drops. “You what?”
“What?” She giggles.
“You know what, I’m just gonna pretend that I didn’t hear you say that there are romance books about aliens kidnapping humans to populate their planet, like on what Earth is that—” I pause as she glares at me. “What? What did I say, now?”
“You’re not meant to kink shame.” she says, glaring at me.
