Chapter Twenty-Nine

One month later. Operation Get Kicked Out of Wes’s Apartment is officially terminated.
"I'm so excited to finally record this," Erika says as she looks up from her notes. "I think that line comparing Wes to Darcy is amazing. Who would've thought my brother could be so romantic?"
"Not me," I say, giggling, "but actually me because he's fantastic, and I love him."
Erika groans. "I know that things are going well, but I really don't want to hear about my big brother being great anymore." She rolls her eyes. "I mean, I'm so glad that maybe one day you'll be my sister-in-law and we will officially be related, but oh, my gosh, you guys need to get a room."
I giggle at her words. "I'm just really happy," I say, staring at the promise ring on my finger. I took off the engagement ring because I don't want to pretend to be engaged when we are still in the official dating phase.
"Does it feel weird to be dating my brother yet living with him?" she says.
"No, because we know each other and we've been living together." I shrug. "Plus, he needs me here to keep him honest."
"Yeah, I guess so." She rolls her eyes. "So did your mom start that job yet?"
"She starts on Monday, actually."
I beam at her. "I am so grateful to Wes, and I know he thinks that I'm stubborn and my mom is stubborn, but it really made a difference to her, knowing she got the job herself. I mean, she loves to read books, right? So a reader for a publishing company sounds as good as it can get."
"It's amazing," I say, nodding.
“She’s going to make $70,000 a year, and we just moved her into a new place. I just feel incredibly happy."
I look over in the corner, and Bruno is chewing on a bone.
"And I'm so glad that Bruno and I got to stay here. I don't think he would've liked living in a studio apartment with me somewhere."
"He's so cute," she says. "I love him. I want a dog, too."
"Yeah, well, maybe you can get one when you meet someone."
Erika groans. "Yeah. I mean, if that's ever going to happen after Tyler ruined my date with Thunder."
"I'm so sorry. That really sucks. I mean, I don't really understand why Thunder took it so personally, but did I tell you what he said?"
"Yes," I say, but that doesn't stop her. She's been talking about Thunder nonstop for the last couple of weeks.
"He told me that he thought that I deliberately set up the date to make Tyler jealous, even though I told him I had never even met him before.
I don't even watch hockey, and he's a jackass.
He spilled his drink on me. Anyway, I tried to tell Thunder that, and he was all like, 'Well, you seem immature.
' And I was like, 'I'm the same woman you were chatting with.
' And he was like, 'Well, your friend...
'” She pauses as she looks at me. "I won't say what he said about you. "
"It's fine. I don't care what he said. I'm sure it wasn't good. I told you that his friend Joa saw me and your brother fucking in the hallway." I start giggling. "He probably called me a slut. Did he call me a slut?"
"I'm not going to repeat what he said," she says, laughing. "I just think that he should have given me a real shot. Like, I don't even know Tyler."
"Yeah, I know." I smile at her. "You could ask your brother if you want to get to know him. I'm sure that?—"
"Oh, I never want to see that man again in my life. I would never date someone who's into sports. Yuck. He wasn't even all that good-looking. I mean, you could tell he thought he was good-looking, but he totally wasn't."
"Who wasn't what?" Wes says as he walks into the room. "How's the podcast going?"
"Fine," I say. "I think we're making headway. We're going to start recording soon."
"Great. I can't wait to hear it." He comes over and gives me a kiss on the cheek and rubs my shoulders. "So I was thinking that we could get pizza tonight. Sound good? You want to stay over, Erika?"
"Yeah, that sounds good."
"I think Miles is going to come over, too," Wes continues.
"Sweet," I say. "That sounds like a plan."
"And my friend Tyler may pop over, but?—"
"No." Erika jumps up. "I don't want to see that jackass."
"What?" Wes looks surprised. "You don't even know him."
"He spilled his beer on me."
"He thought you were Sabrina," Wes explains. "I asked him to spill the drink on Sabrina, and he thought it was you. I asked him why he thought it was you, and he said—he looks at me and gives me a wry smile—'Sorry, I thought it was the really hot one.' So, he thinks you're hot."
"I don't care if he thinks I'm hot. He's rude as hell."
I burst out laughing. "Maybe you can go on a date with him and?—"
"No," they both say at the same time.
I look at Wes in surprise. "Why did you say no?"
"I'm not letting my little sister date Tyler Kane." He shakes his head. "No way in hell. That man goes through women the way some people go through gum."
"And I'm not interested in him anyway," Erika says, rolling her eyes. "I'm just going to go back on the apps and hopefully meet someone else, someone who's not like Thunder, someone who actually understands that I am an honest and?—"
My phone starts ringing, interrupting us.
"Oh, who's that?" Wes looks at me, eyes raised.
"Oh, it's Sadie, my sister."
"Why don't you invite her over?" Erika says with a small smile. "I'd love to see her again. I only got to meet her for ten minutes that time."
I nod slowly. "I guess I can do that. I feel really bad for her. She doesn't seem to be doing so well. Her mom...well... " I make a face. "Her mom doesn't seem to want to leave my dad, and my dad is not quitting drinking, so it's just not a good time for her."
"Did you tell your mom?" Wes says, asking the question he's been asking me every day since we met my sister.
I shake my head, "Not yet. I mean, I want to tell her, of course, but her life is just finally getting on track. I don't want her to go down that road again, and I don't want her to even think about my dad, you know?"
Wes nods. "I know." He pulls me into his arms and gives me a kiss on the lips. "But I've got your back. Whenever you need me, I'm here for you, and I'm here for her."
"I know. Thank you." I kiss him and run my fingers across his shoulders.
Erika lets out a loud groan and jumps up.
"I'm going to the kitchen to get something to drink. And then I'm going to sit down and watch TV because I do not want to witness my brother and my best friend making out. I mean, I love you all, and I’m glad that you found each other and finally admit how much you guys love each other because it’s been obvious to me and Miles for ages,” she giggles as she heads to the door, “but I don’t want to witness this.
And if you guys are about to make love or whatever you call it, please keep the door closed and be quiet because I don’t want to hear that. "
"Oh, my gosh, Erika. I'm not going to do that," I say, giggling.
"I don't know," she says, winking at me and leaving the room.
She closes the door behind her, and Wes just shakes his head. "My sister," he says. "What am I going to do with her?"
"I guess keep loving her," I say, and he nods.
"I love her, and I love you." He presses his lips against mine. I feel his hand creep up inside my shirt. "And I want to be loving you right now," he says.
"Wes, no, we can't."
"What? Just five minutes."
"Five minutes." I raise an eyebrow. "Really?"
"Ten minutes."
"Really, Wes?"
"I mean, I don't have the hour to give you that I normally would. Miles will be here soon. Tyler?—"
"Tyler? But she said not to invite him."
"Too late," he says, grinning. “He’s already been invited.”
“Oh, my gosh. You do know that war is going to break out when she sees him."
"It'll be fine. We'll just give her pizza, and she can play with Bruno." He chuckles. "Plus, I'm sure he's not going to stay that long."
"Really?"
"Really. Anyway, let's not talk about them. Let's talk about us and how excited I am for our trip to Paris tomorrow."
"I know. I'm excited, as well."
"I'm sorry it wasn't our first official date, though."
"It's fine. It's the anniversary of our first official date." I grin at him. "And that's special enough for me."
"I'm glad," he says, "because maybe something special is going to happen when we're there."
"What, Wes?"
"I'm not going to tell you, my sugar pie honey bunch." He kisses me on the lips again. "Just know that I love you, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you."
"I love you, too, darling. You know I do, right?"
"I know." He grins at me. "I mean, I'd know even more if we made love right now, but?—"
The doorbell rings then, and he groans. "Whoever that is, I'm going to kill them," he says with a laugh.
"Saved by the bell," I say, giggling. "But don't worry…" I reach down and squeeze his cock.
"It's already hard."
I laugh lightly.
" I'll make it up to you tonight."
"Promise?"
"I promise, my darling. Tonight and every night, I'm yours.”
