“She’s in with the doctors, but she’s fine.”
He seemed satisfied with that answer because he was on to another subject.
“Ms. Greta made me hamburgers and French fries.” He picked at the little hairs on the back of my hand. “She’s my grandma?”
I narrowed my eyes.
“That’s what the old man said.” Cason looked up at me.
“What old man?” I asked.
“Papa Scott.” He said his name with a deep voice, mocking my dad’s voice.
“That’s my father.” I said. “You are my son.”
“I know.” He said as he looked around the room.
“How do you know?”
“Papa Scott.” He said as if I hadn’t been listening. He spotted YoYo. “He let me ride on his bike.” He pointed. “But don’t tell Mommy.”
Olivia walked over and sat next to me.
“Hey squirt.” She said to Cason.
“Hi Miss Olivia.” His little fist gripped my shirt as if he had no intention of leaving with anyone else.
YoYo and Red walked up and kneeled in front of us.
“Hey guys I would like you to meet my son.” I said. The words sounded weird coming out of my mouth.
My son.
“How you doing little man?” Red ruffled his hair.
Cason grinned, but clung to me.
I held him close.
“Can we go see Mommy?” He asked.
“Soon.” I hugged him.
Derrick walked into the room and sat at a bank of chairs across the room. My internal radar went up and even though we’d been friends since we were kids and he showed up when I needed him. The missing details of Mattie’s death didn’t sit well with me.
My father ordered it.
How was Derrick involved? And if he was involved and it led to my brother’s death, what the fuck happened?
“Case.” I turned my attention to the little boy sitting on my lap. It felt so natural, like we did it all the time. “Will you sit with Ms. Olivia for a minute while I go talk to my . . .” I nodded in Derrick’s direction, but couldn’t say his name.
Cason held tighter.
“I’ll be right over there.” I said, which was a good thing. I wouldn’t act an ass in front of my son.
“Come here squirt.” Olivia took him off my lap.
He went to her, but you could tell he was reluctant to let me go.
