That’s it, Angel. Question that motherfucker’s motives. I know damn well I am.
“Wait. Are you suggesting that—
“No, Ant. Not you. Them.”
“Fuck. I’m so sorry. Are you going to be okay?”
“Yeah, just go.”
My phone buzzes in my pocket as I’d expected.
Evan: I need someone to check out my place. Fire alarm has been activated.
Daemon: I’m a few minutes away.
Evan: Calli is home alone. Make sure she’s safe.
“You fucking got it, Boss,” I breathe.
“Dad, yeah. I’m fine. Yeah. I’m going to head up now.” Her steps thunder up the stairs before a door slams, cutting her off from me.
I wait a couple of minutes as the water continues to soak both me and the bathroom before I shoot back another message.
Daemon: Everything looks fine, Boss.
Evan: I’ll call off the fire brigade. Head inside to be sure though.
Daemon: Sure thing.
Suddenly, I’m plunged into silence and the water stops spraying.
Moving to the door, I wait, my pulse thundering in my ears, for her to return.
Was soaking Evan’s entire house an over-the-top way of getting rid of Ant and raising his suspicions? Yeah. Do I give a fuck? Not a single fucking one.
“Fucking hell,” Calli sighs
My phone buzzes again and I lift it from my side.
Nico: You need me to come over, man?
I smile at the fact that everyone else bar me is asleep right now and less than prepared to jump into action.
Daemon: Nah, man. It’s all good.
Nico: Calli can crash here if she needs to get out.
I smirk. Oh yeah, that’s not happening.
Daemon: I’ll keep you informed. But everything looks good. Must have glitched.
“What the fuck am I meant to do now?” Calli cries. “Isn’t life already shit enough?” she asks no one.
Dropping my phone back into my pocket, I push the door handle down and pull it open.
She doesn’t notice me. She’s too busy standing in the middle of the basement, staring at her bed in disbelief.
I step up behind her, moving silently in the darkness before I make myself known.
