DAEMON
My skin prickles with her attention as my lie sours on my tongue.
“Bullshit,” she spits.
My hand trembles against her hip and I pray to anyone who’ll listen that she can’t feel it.
She can already see deeper into my soul than anyone else. She already knows too much.
It’s one of the many reasons that should have kept me away tonight.
I tried to do the right thing.
I sat my arse on my sofa, surrounded by fucking textbooks and everything I should have been doing. But I couldn’t focus.
Instead of maths, my head was full of her.
I knew she was here—she’d let that slip the other day at lunch—and the temptation to sneak in and surprise her was burning through me hotter than it should have.
I had every intention of heading over to keep her company, assuming the kids had gone to bed.
I didn’t have a clue about kids. I barely even remember being one myself, if I ever was, but I told myself that waiting until past ten pm would be safe and I headed over.
The last fucking thing I expected to find after I parked down the street and walked into the boss’s driveway was Alex’s car next to the one I rescued from the Italian’s warehouse. I’d left Calli tied to my bed to ensure she’d still be there when I got back from covering her tracks.
Fury coiled in my stomach as jealousy dripped through my veins, quickly poisoning me from the inside out.
The image of them curled up on the sofa together watching a film, drinking, laughing…
I’ve seen first-hand how close they’ve become, and while I might not have done anything about it so far for fear of Alex, anyone, finding out the truth, I don’t fucking like it.
She’s mine. The light in all my dark. The angel to my devil.
The fucking air I need to breathe.
“I see you, Daemon. I see more than you think, and I know you love your brother something fierce, even if you don’t want to show it.”
My teeth grind at her words.
“It’s why you didn’t just storm in there and announce your presence. It’s why you didn’t let yourself into my basement the other day and drag me from his body. You don’t want to hurt him.”
“No,” I argue, my cock softening and slipping from her body.
She spins around the second I stumble back, her eyes boring into mine.
“I see you, Daemon. You can’t hide from me.”
My chest heaves as I stare at her, terrified that she might just be right.
I’ve given her more of me than I have anyone else, but I fear she may have managed to bury even deeper than I thought.
When I don’t respond, she changes tack.
“You need to leave.”
“W-what?” I stutter, not expecting those words to fall from her lips.
“You need to leave. I need to clean up, and you’re not going to stand there and watch me.”
