He returns the smile.

“Because you yelled at me,” he pouts.

“You yelled too,” I reason.

“Only because I want you…” Kane trails off, not finishing his sentence.

“You want me to what?”

“To feel about me how I feel about you.”

He leans down and kisses me with his strong arms still wrapped around me. When our lips part, he presses his forehead to mine.

“I love you, Kane.”

The words tumble out of my mouth so freely that my stomach does somersaults as I wait for Kane’s reaction.

“Thank God. Getting you to say that was like pulling teeth,” Kane laughs.

I laugh and smack his chest.

“That wasn’t the response I was hoping to hear,” I tease him.

“I love you, too, Lexi,” Kane smirks before hugging me tightly.

“I promise to be open with you from now on…” I tell him after we break apart.

“Any more ex-fiancés who look like me that I should know about?”

I shake my head. “No other fiancés. No other doppelgangers. And no one who compares to you either.”

He pulls me into a passionate kiss that makes me melt into his arms.

“Come on, let’s go back to our place and get take-out,” Kane suggests, nodding toward the door.

“Oh, our place?” I laugh. “I like the sound of that.”

He winks at me and holds the door open for me.

“What about my stuff? Melanie and Ricky are supposed to help me move tonight.”

“I’ll send someone for your stuff. It’s time you let a real man take care of you,” Kane mutters into my ear before kissing my cheek.

Just as with any good thing that happens to me, I wonder if this is some crazy dream. My knight in a business suit rescues me from my annoying, loveless life… and then I’ll wake up and realize it was all a fairytale.

But then I pinch myself and remember – I’m worthy of love. I’m worthy of an amazing man like Kane Jones. Even though I’m a mess with my sweaty hair, ratty moving clothes, and splotchy face, I walk outside with confidence, knowing that none of that matters.

Just like it didn’t matter that Jason is gorgeous in his wax-like shell of a body. Because inside, he is dull and ugly. It isn’t Kane’s incredible body or handsome face that makes him most desirable, it’s who he is inside. It’s the way he makes me feel when he looks at me.

From this moment on, I vow to look at myself through Kane’s gorgeous icy blue eyes.
