Kane
It’s late Saturday morning when I head out to my softball game. I own the Madison Merchants, a men’s recreational team that supports charities. I require all team members to pay fees to cover the costs of uniforms and field time, but they also donate time and money to various charities.
The team looks exhausted when I arrive. We don’t usually do Saturday morning games, but it happens once in a while. Since we’re all made up of hard-working middle-aged businessmen, for the most part, we prefer to sleep in on Saturdays.
I should be worn out, too. I must have come five times last night! But I had the most amazing sleep with Lexi in my arms. Her warm curves had fit snugly against me, and I was disappointed not to see her next to me when I woke up.
Normally, I appreciate it when a woman gets the hint. I hate it when I have to awkwardly guide booty calls to the door. Usually, I can’t even fall asleep with some strange woman in my bed, but I’ve never slept better than I did last night. Maybe it was because we had such insane sex that I was too relaxed to do anything but sleep… with my arms wrapped around Lexi, of course.
I set my softball bag down on the bench and nod toward Mike, my business partner and friend from Marquee.
“What’s up, man?”
“What are you so peppy about?” he inquires.
I shrug. “It’s a nice day, and I’m with my boys. What’s not to be upbeat about?”
Mike tilts his head to the side. “I was surprised you weren’t at Marquee last night.”
“The scene is getting a little stale for me, you know?”
“Carly was looking for you.”
I groan. “And you wonder why I haven’t been around much.”
Mike laughs. “I’m with you, Kane. Ever since I got married, it’s like more women than ever hit on me at the lounge. I don’t get it.”
“Watch your back, Mike. Those girls are not worth it,” I sigh.
“So, what’d you do last night?”
“Nothing. I had a few drinks at a dive and then went home,” I play it off.
Mike smirks, “You went a dive bar?”
“Sometimes I like to keep things low key.”
“I get it, but… you’re in too good of a mood. Who’s the girl?”
I can’t help but smile, thinking of Lexi, grateful she left me her number.
“No one. She’s just a girl I met.”
“At a dive bar?” Mike asks, amused.
“Yes, at a dive bar. It’s not a big deal,” I shrug. “Just business as usual.”
“If you say so,” Mike hums, taking a sip of his energy drink.
After the softball game, I head home to shower. My plan for the rest of the day is to spend the afternoon with Kayla at the dog park before the charity function I have to attend.
When I get out of the shower, I stare at my bed. The housekeeper, who has her own living quarters on this floor, has already made the bed. The sight of the made-up bed disappoints me for some reason. I liked seeing the sheets a mess; the sight reminded me of the fun night I’d had with Lexi.
Sitting on the bed, I pull one of the pillows to my nose. The faint smell of coconuts hits my nostrils, and I smile. I get dressed and put on a pot of coffee, even though it’s mid-afternoon. I know I will have a hard time staying awake the rest of the day. The activities of last night have finally caught up to me, and the exertion of the softball game hadn’t helped my energy levels any.
Taking a sip of my coffee, I grab my phone and start a new message.
