Story: Unlikely

I bring it up in front of my face, letting it hang before me. “What do you?—”

And that’s when I see it, the little Z engraved on the key.

“Zara,” I breathe out, lowering my hand so my eyes meet hers. “It’s beautiful.”

“It is,” she says, her gaze on me and not the necklace. “It matches mine.”

My brows furrow in confusion as she reaches into the drawer, this time pulling out her own necklace and handing it to me.

I place it over her head and let my fingers linger as they move down to the key. My breath hitches as I turn it around, feeling both expectant and surprised at the sight of the letter C on the stem.

“Because you have all of me,” she says softly. “The whole pieces and the broken bits. The things I love about myself and the things I don’t.”

I reach for my pendant, my fingers tracing the simple Z, over and over again, as the sight of the three letters resting on her chest make it all feel permanent. Everlasting.

We’re all there, the most important people in her life: Raine, Lola, andme.
