Story: The Ryder Of the Night
“Don’t go with him,” I implored through our bond.
“Jaxus? He helped bring you here. I think we can trust him.”
“It’s not that,” I growled.
She looked between the male and me and raised a brow. “Are you jealous?”
“I can’t move, and he can tell you’re aroused. Of course I’m jealous,” I snapped.
She made a frustrated sound.
Jaxus chuckled. He couldn’t know what we were saying, but I had no doubt he could guess.
Zaria rolled her eyes. “Of course I’m stuck in a place filled with dragons. I thought I had no privacy back in my village, but this is so much worse.” She pushed past Jaxus, and he smirked before following her out.
I tried to sit up, but I couldn’t even raise my shoulders.
“Calm, youngling. You can’t do anything until you heal.”
It had been many years since I’d been called youngling, but to this fae, I guess I was. I sighed and relented.
“Sorry to meet you under such circumstances, but it is always a pleasure to meet another dragon.”
“Likewise. Thank you for all that you did.” I made sure to keep any ice from my tone. I didn’t like being separated from Zaria, but we couldn’t make enemies here. We had to make everyone root for us so when we spoke to their elders, we had a wave of support. I wasn’t under any delusion there was another way.
“You’re lucky to be alive. Your mate saved your life.” I winced at his use of the term. She was not ready to hear it.
“She isn’t…yet,” I hedged.
“Nonsense. Your mate is destined; there is no yet.”
“It’s not an easy situation.”
“She know?” This healer was going right for the gut.
“I haven’t found the right moment for the conversation.”
He made a disgruntled sound. “No important conversations are easy.”
“Fair point.” I tried to move again but hissed. Giving up, I swallowed my pride and asked, “Can you help me?”
“Are you uncomfortable? I can give you another dose of the milk of poppy after you eat.”
“Wing cramp. Can you move it?”
“Yes. I’m here to check how they are healing anyway.” He moved behind me, collecting things. It was almost comforting because when he didn’t speak, he sounded exactly like Kiera.
“How bad are they?” I kept my tone flat. He’d know what my wings meant to me.
“Hard to say until I get a better idea of how your body is processing the Dragon’s Bane. You are awake, which is a good sign.” He lifted the sheet over me. “Your magic stores are still quite low after nearly a full day, so your body is using that magic to heal.”
“That’s good.”
“Can you roll to your stomach?”
I gritted my teeth and tried, but my body wouldn’t do what I wanted. “Can you help me?”
“Persistent weakness is a normal side effect of the poisoning.”
