Story: The Comeback Pact

I don’t know how to do this. Kenna and I didn’t plan it out. We just kind of decided and leaped.
I peer at her. In her eyes, I gain all the strength I need. In her face, I know I’ll always find comfort. In her love, so deep that sometimes I can barely catch my breath, I’ll always feel mine mirrored back. In understanding. In patience. In bravery.
Sydney’s the first to get it. She gasps, then screams out, “I knew it!”
Kenna chuckles, still keeping my stare. “I didn’t tell her, I promise.”
“What?” her mom asks, clearly confused.
“Today, I’m getting drafted,” I say for everyone else’s benefit, but I still only have eyes for the girl who loves me when no one else did. “But I’m also going to marry my best friend.”
Mrs. Knowles gasps now, too. Coach’s wifeoohsandahhs, and my mom? She starts to cry.
“Like, right now?” one of my teammates asks.
“Like right now,” Kenna agrees.
“There’s no way I was going to start the next phase of my life without making sure I had Kenna with me. Forever and always.”
And then the real best day of my life kicks off. With Kenna by my side, I’ll have so many more.
I’m convinced that the greatest lives are tallied by how many best days one can cram into them. Mine only started when I met Kenna. And they’ll end with Kenna, too.
