“No, you’re not. You weren’t invited.”
“I’ll take him if you don’t want him,” a girl in the passenger seat offered.
“See? Invited. Scoot.” Christian slid into the back seat that already had three people in it, squishing Maizie in the middle.
“I’m pretty sure you only came here to ruin my life,” Maizie said as the guy in the driver’s seat started up the car.
“Yep. Came here just for you, princess.”
“Weren’t you that hot cop?” The girl from the front seat asked.
Christian said yes at the same time Maizie said no.
He turned to look at her. “I think you secretly liked me in that police uniform.”
She stared straight ahead, refusing to meet his eyes, which was all the confirmation he needed.
“I’m Paisyn, and you can arrest me anytime.” The girl in the front said again. The guy in the driver’s seat shot Christian a glare through the rearview mirror.
Everyone was so friendly in this town.Not.
They’d only driven a few blocks before they stopped in front of a building made entirely of glass windows.
“Where are we?” Christian asked, pulling on the door handle.
“Maybe you should have asked before you got in the car.” Maizie shoved him, and he went flying through the door. His left foot got tangled under the front seat, but it didn’t stop his backside from hitting the asphalt.
“I knew you had two left feet on the dance floor, but I didn’t know it applied to cars as well.” Maizie peered down at him, her face contorted in a wicked grin.
“You know you could say sorry,” Christian said, managing to untangle his foot with no help from Maizie, who for the first time in her life was patiently waiting for him.
“I could,” Maizie said and stepped out as soon as he was standing.
Christian bit the inside of his cheek, he just needed to make it through this night alive. And out of prison preferably. “Are they breaking in?” Christian asked, nodding to the three guys messing with the front door of the building.
“Of course not silly.” Paisyn giggled and wrapped a hand around his forearm. “Jake works at the pool, so he has a key.”
“Pool?”
Maizie rolled her eyes. “Yes, dummy. We’re going swimming.”
“No we aren’t. I didn’t plan for this.”
“You can just wear that.” Paisyn wiggled her eyebrows at him.
“I’ll just watch. But thank you.” Christian peeled himself away from the girl with claws for fingernails.
Maizie was already halfway into the building. “Are you going to swim in your dress?”
“Of course not.” Maizie continued on but gave no further explanation.
That only left . . . “We are leaving.” Christian tried to pull her back by her arm.
“Relax, grandpa. We left our suits here earlier. We always come after a dance. You didn’t really think I’d go skinny dipping with you, did you?”
“I thought I wasn’t invited.”
She was testing him. Why, though? Did she want him to be jealous?
