Story: Conceal (Eagle Tactical 3)
“Please, Enzo. I beg of you, I have a wife and two daughters,” Zan said, his voice trembled.
“Then do yourself the honorable task, or I will make sure they suffer with you.”
What honorable task?
What did Enzo want Zan to do?
Was that a threat?
“Forgive me, Enzo,” Zan said.
Bang!
A shudder rippled through my body.
I became one with the seat, curled up, and bent down, as I shoved my body onto the floor. Hidden.
It became harder to breathe beneath the darkened hood that covered my face. Each breath expelled from my lungs took two gulps of air to replace.
I began hyperventilating.
Heavy boots stomped over the ground. The sound came closer. The door squeaked on its hinges as it was opened.
I stayed curled up on the floor in a ball. My head bent down with the thick black bag over my head.
He yanked the material from over my face. It took no time for my eyes to adjust. It remained dark outside. I stumbled backward, moving to the opposite end of the car, away from him.
“Tesero, you need to come with me,” Enzo said.
I shook my head. My name wasn’ttesero. I didn’t even know what that word meant. It sounded Italian, and I didn’t speak a word of Italian.
Enzo held out his hand for me.
How could I take it, even if I wanted to? My arms were behind my back, my hands cuffed.
He grabbed me by the arm and dragged me out of the car.
“Turn around,” he demanded. “Face the car.” I did as I was told.
How far could I run? It was difficult to see much in the darkness of night. The moon was obstructed from view, the thick clouds overhead. There weren’t any nearby houses or porches with their lights on, except for the one just a few yards away.
We were in the middle of nowhere.
How long had we driven? It hadn’t been that far.
Were we still in Breckenridge?
“Did you kill Zan?” I asked. I’d caught his name while the two men had been arguing about me.
His hands were rough, his fingers thick and warm. He undid the handcuffs. Was I free to go?
Enzo spun me around, trapped between him and the side of the car.
“That is none of your concern,” Enzo said. His eyes were dark. “Come with me.” He grabbed my arm and yanked me to follow him.
I wanted to run.
Where would I go? I had no phone, didn’t know where I was or how to get away. How far was the next property? Darkness stretched on as far as I could see.
