“I have no idea. I never saw the final list of food trucks, but I know there will be over a hundred of them there. Cross your fingers he’s not one of them. I don’t want any more surprises.” She gestured to me. “One’s enough.”
I didn’t want any further surprises, either.
Too bad the Universe wasn’t listening.
I did a double-take as we neared the entrance of the dining room downstairs. Sitting next to Damian Landau in the middle of the long dining table was the last person in the world I expected to see.
My ex-girlfriend.
First Zoe, then Damian, and now Savannah.
Just wonderful . . .
My past had come back to haunt me.
ChapterFive
ZOE
Lucas ran his hand softly across my lower back, gently gripping my waist on the other side, and pulling me to a stop at the entrance of the dining room.
Temporarily paralyzed, I felt a flush of warmth and tingles spreading from my head to my toes as my breath caught in my throat.
I really hated it with a passion when someone I despised so much made my traitorous body react that way.
What on earth was going on with me?
It was a side effect of the concussion, obviously.
Sure, Lucas was ridiculously charismatic and appallingly gorgeous, but how many times had I creatively plotted his demise over the last ten years? More than I could count. But just because he’d done me the favor of posing as my fake husband didn’t give him the right to get all handsy with me. The pretense was over anyway.
The most important thing at that moment was food. I was so hungry I was contemplating gnawing off his arm and dipping it in melted cheese.
“The noise in this room is not good for your concussion,” he whispered in my ear. “I think we should go back upstairs.”
I, once again, regained my composure and glanced around, wondering why he was concerned. Yes, the dining room was almost full, but there were only ten people in there if I had counted correctly. Twelve, if you counted me and Lucas.
It wasn’t that loud, besides, I was starving.
I turned to him. “It’s fine. We won’t be here long, and I need food. I can handle the noise.”
He’d obviously forgotten that I didn’t like being told what to do, plus you never mess with a woman when she’s hungry.
“Let’s eat,” I demanded.
Lucas didn’t look pleased with my answer, hesitating. “It’s just . . .” He sighed. “See that woman over there? The one next to Damian?”
I glanced over at the gorgeous brunette. She wore a low-cut burgundy dress that showed off enough cleavage for a party of five, and silver hooped earrings that were large enough for a Bengal tiger to jump through.
“Yeah . . . What about her?” I asked.
“She’s, uh, well . . . kind of like my ex-girlfriend.”
I twisted to Lucas. “Do you mean she looks like your ex or that she actuallyisyour ex?”
“Lucas!” the woman said, bouncing in her seat, causing Thelma and Louise to practically pop out of the top of her dress. “I can’t believe this.”
“Does that answer your question?” Lucas whispered to me. “Our fake-marriage is still in effect. Play along, since I have no idea if she wants to get back together with me.”
