“No, she said I had to come alone,” I protested. “If I don’t, she might hurt Rosalina.”

“Yes and Gonira and whoever else,” Damien said, giving me a narrow-eyed look as if to point out my disregard for the other captives. “But you don’t really think we’re going to let you go alone.”

“I have to. I can’t risk Rosalina getting h—”

“Don’t waste your breath arguing,” Eric interrupted.

“Yeah,” Jake said. “No way in hell we’re letting you go by yourself. We’re coming with.”

CHAPTER 3

Sometimes, being surroundedby alpha males—werewolves or otherwise—sucked. All three ganged up on me, insisting that whether or not I took them with me, they would be there. They knew the rendezvous location and time, after all.

“It will be fine if we come with you,” Jake reasoned. “Mekare won’t hurt anyone until she has the elixir. If that was her intention, she would have done it already.”

“For all we know, she did.”

“Shh,” Jake pressed a finger to my lips. “Up until now you haven’t allowed any of us to be negative, so I’m not letting you do that. Rosalina is fine, and she’ll be there tonight.”

I nodded. He was right. I shouldn’t lose hope now.

“Also, I doubt the witch will be there alone because she knows there’s no way we wouldnotgo with you,” Jake added.

“Besides, it’s our chance to get her,” Damien put in, hatred flashing in his copper eyes.

“No! Nah-ah. You have to promise not to do anything stupid. Getting Rosalina out alive... and the others, too, of course,” I added quickly, “is our priority.”

Rather than giving me one of his flippant answers, the mage bowed respectfully. “Most certainly.” His demeanor appeared sincere, but still, I needed to make triple sure.

“Promise. All three of you.”

“We promise,” they said in unison.

“The elixir doesn’t matter,” I added, giving Damien a pointed look. I was willing to make the exchange regardless of Damien’s promise to Bernadetta to give it to her.

He sighed. “The Donna will come after me, but I guess that’s a riddle for another day.”
