CHAPTER 18
To my dismay, on secondinspection, Damien found out that his Demonology Register was almost two years out of date. It didn’t seem like an awful long time, but he explained that demonology records were updated constantly. Apparently, there was a sort of wiki—though it wasn’t really online because... who would publish sensitive information about summoning demons and make it available to the masses?!Duh!—which the LDHs across the world kept up-to-date with the latest information. Demon hunters everywhere turned in their findings, and the data was compiled and curated by a dedicated body of people.
To avoid more complications like the one we had today, the mage contacted his friend in New York, who promised to email the relevant information on the second blood demon on Damien’s short list.
“I’ll be back at eight for our date,” Jake said with a kiss. He had a couple of things to take care ofandhe had to change.
I was concerned about us going out and being attacked by Mekare—she was a vengeful bitch, and I wouldn’t put it past her to be planning something against us—but Jake assured me it would be all right. Wherever we were going, he said we didn’t have to worry about the Midnight Witch.
It was hard to clear my mind from all my worries and get in a date mood. I felt it would be impossible to have any fun with all the worries weighing me down, but once I told Rosalina about the date, my outlook started changing.
“Oh, gosh, what are you going to wear?” she asked. We were in my bedroom. “All you have here are ratty jeans, sweats, and T-shirts.”
“I was hoping I could borrow something from you. You’re always prepared for this type of emergency.”
“I have a few pieces that are better than what you’ve been calling your wardrobe lately, but nothing like what Jake suggested. I do have my makeup kit on hand, so in that department, you’re safe.” She gasped, her eyes going huge. “And what about... your undies.”
“Huh?”
“You know...”
“Shit!” I pressed a hand to my mouth, realizing I didn’t have anything nice to wear except for drab cotton panties and functional bras. I collapsed on the bed, suddenly stressed out about very different things than this morning.
“We have to go shopping.” Rosalina placed her hands on her hips, her expression suggesting she thought this was a matter of life and death, and by the way my hands had gone clammy, it seemed that my instincts agreed with her.
I rubbed the back of my neck. “But it wouldn’t be sensible. I mean... we’re at war, and there is this nutty witch bent on killing us all.”
She sat next to me and started tapping her fingers on her thigh. “We have to find a way.”
“I have a feeling Eric isn’t going to let us walk out of here to go to the mall.” I hadn’t told Rosalina about the moment Eric and I had shared earlier. Had the fearmonger demon made him believe one of us was dead when it reached into his soul? I felt pretty certain it had.
I glanced sideways at Rosalina, wondering what the demon had shown her, but I was afraid to ask and find out it had something to do with the agency.
“Maybe we can order something online.” I reached for my phone.
“Who’s going to deliver in a few hours?”
“I don’t know,” I said as I pulled up one of the major stores that had same-day deliveries.
Rosalina leaned her head into mine, and we spent the better part of an hour trying to find something suitable that could be delivered in time. Nothing satisfied my friend.
“No way you’re going on this date wearing that bathrobe!” she exclaimed, snatching my phone and throwing it across the bed. “It’s useless.”
“It’s better than what I have.”
