CHAPTER 23
The wall disappearedlike last time, and a moment later, a figure appeared inside the dark tunnel. I brightened up at the thought of seeing Yura again. A moment later, the keeper of Wolfskeep stepped out of the shadows and welcomed us with a smile.
“Greetings. Please, say your vows and enter,” she said in her melodious voice. She wore the same braids at either side of her dark hair, like last time, except now she had feathers and beads adorning them. They matched the colorful embroidery of her outfit perfectly.
Ulfen went first. “At this sacred juncture, I vow to a moratorium with all the alpha members of this and any other Pack Rule. I vow to uphold our values and make every decision for the protection of our kind.”
The others followed. Jake went last and vouched for me before I was allowed to pass.
As we entered the passage, Jake and I hung back, letting the others get ahead. He brushed the back of my hand with his and gave me a bedroom smile that brought back more memories of last night and sent a thrill of excitement down my belly. I returned his smile.
“So not the place, Jake,” I whispered.
He leaned forward and spoke in my ear. “You unleashed something,” he purred.
Images of his fine, naked body flashed before me.
Someone get me a bucket of ice water!
I needed to walk into Wolfskeep with Jake’s mouthwatering physique out of my mind. For what was to come next, we needed to sober up and leave all our hormones outside the door.
As we reached the end of the tunnel, and we entered the meeting area, Jake shook himself, also seeming aware that our time for games of any kind was over.
Everyone took a moment to walk around the room. The banners hanging on the stone walls, and the inlaid table held a beauty that could be admired every day.
Yura stood at the window, peering at the faraway mountains. I wondered again about Wolfskeep’s location. It seemed like another world, at least another continent. She sensed me as I approached and smiled over her shoulder.
“Beautiful, huh?” she said.
I nodded.
“How do you fare among all these male alphas?”
“Not too bad.” They could be a pain in the ass, but they weren’t my real problem.
“It all changes when you try to lead,” she said, a certain bitterness in her tone.
“Are you a pack leader?”
