CHAPTER 2
“Hello,” I answeredmy cell in a shaky voice, my heart swelling with hope.
“Hello, dear.”
I lifted my free hand to my chest, willing my paralyzed heart to start beating again. I recognized the voice, and it wasn’t Rosalina’s. The person on the other side of the line was Makare Grave.
“Where is she?!” I demanded.
“No greeting? After what we’ve been through?”
I clenched my teeth to repress a sob. Silence roared in my ear, seeming louder than a scream.
Mekare sighed. “Okay, straight to business then. I know you’re looking for her.”
“Of course I’m looking for her! And you’re going to tell me where she is right now or I swear I’ll make you wish you’d never met me.”
“The Prince’s offer must’ve been quite something.”
Huh?The Prince’s offer? What was she talking about?
“I don’t see why anyone cares about this wretched Fae. There’s nothing particularly special about her, and she is aroyalpain in the ass.”
I blinked at Eric and Damien who wore twin questioning expressions.
“Who are you talking about?” I said, feeling as dumb as a thumbtack. She must be referring to Gonira, but I didn’t want to believe that. It was Rosalina I needed to know about. I was aware it was a selfish feeling, but I didn’t give a shit about anyone else right now.
“Gonira Loraerris, of course. Who else? Like I said, I know you’re looking for her. Better yet, I know of your little deal with the Prince. I will save you the trouble of using your pathetic powers and ending up like a clueless mole. I have her, and I’m willing to make an exchange.”
What? How did she know I was looking for Kalyll’s cousin? I shook my head. It didn’t matter.
“Where is Rosalina?” I asked between clenched teeth, my words as jagged as a serrated knife.
“Who?” she asked innocently, a hint of mockery in her tone.
“Quit the bullshit! You have her phone.”
Mekare let out another tired sigh. “I found this in that dreadful cabin. Anyway, if you’re going to waste my time talking about this Rosalina, I guess I’ll have to hang up.”
“No, wait!” Whatever game she was playing, I needed to go along with it. I quickly hit the speaker button, set the phone in the middle of the table, and mouthed the Midnight Witch’s name.
