Page 96 of The One You Want
GRAY:I can’t wait to kiss you
ROSE:Can’t wait to see you.
ROSE:♥
GRAY:You definitely have mine
Maggie walked toward her after saying good-bye to the florist. “Oh, my god, you’re glowing.” Maggie studied her. “And you have never smiled that big ever.”
Rose pressed her phone to her chest and thumping heart. “He’s...”
“What?” Maggie looked like she’d caught Rose’s excitement.
“Amazing. Wonderful. Perfect.”
Maggie hugged her. “I’m so happy for you.” She stepped back, a real smile on her face, but Rose still wondered if Maggie harbored any resentments about the thing with Marc.
Rose spoke before she thought better of it. “It’s a strange sort of thing to meet him because you’re marrying a guy I once knew.”
“Maybe it was just meant to be.” Maggie held her gaze and smiled. She really meant it.
“It feels exactly that way.”
“Which makes me even happier for you. Marc and I, we’re happy together. We’re excited about starting the next chapter in our relationship. I think of the future with him, and I see us with our kids.”
“I know how much you want to be a mom.”
“More than anything. And our kids will be cousins.” Maggie’s smile brightened even more.
“Slow down. Give Gray and me time to catch up.” In her mind, she didn’t doubt they’d be together long after this week in Carmel. They might be moving fast, but Rose didn’t want to skip ahead to a wedding and a family too quickly. She wanted to savor her time with Gray.
Maggie’s smile suddenly dimmed. “I wasn’t sure I’d actually make it down the aisle after...”
Rose understood. “After you and Joel broke up. But you and Marc want the same things. This time, it’s going to be perfect.”
Maggie cocked an eyebrow. “Really. You think this week has been perfect?” Maggie burst out laughing, but it sounded a little forced.
“Okay. Not perfect, but close enough because that’s life. Right?”
“I don’t want perfect. I just want a guy who loves me and wants to have a family and spend the rest of his life being my best friend.”
“That sounds pretty damn good.”
Maggie nodded, looking all too agreeable until her phone rang and she caught her breath.
“What is it?” After the cake fiasco, Rose didn’t think Maggie could take another wedding glitch. Not with only two days before the big day.
“It’s Joel.”
Rose raised a brow and glanced at the ringing phone. “Why on earth is he calling you?”
Curiosity filled Maggie’s gaze. “I don’t know.”
***
Maggie answered the call before it went to voice mail. “Hello.” Her voice trembled and her heart pounded in her ears.
“Maggie, it’s me. Joel.” He sounded nervous, even afraid.
