“ Y ou’re sure you’re okay?” Logan asked for the third time.
“Yes,” I promised again. “I’m just adjusting.”
Was everything weird as hell? Absolutely.
Was I struggling with the shift in relationships?
Of course. But I was coming to terms with how things were and how I knew they would be changing as we moved forward.
I wasn’t particularly comfortable with Yelena.
Truthfully, I wasn’t entirely certain what I felt around Yelena, but Logan liked her, and that was enough for now. All the rest would come in time.
My omega was sweetly curled around me, everyone else giving us some time alone after last night.
Watching Yelena with Logan was a lot. More than I expected.
I knew how things worked with Logan. Yelena was new, and she knew what she wanted, knew how to direct the situation to her liking.
She was cocky, self-assured…intoxicating in a way I didn’t know what to do with.
Part of me felt disloyal to even consider it.
The permission Logan had given me didn’t assuage any of the guilt or any of the currents of confusion and desire that roiled inside me.
Many shifters practiced polyamory, so much so that I was probably out of the ordinary for attaching myself to a single person.
I had partnered pretty freely in my youth; most of us did.
But when it came to serious commitments?
Most omegas wouldn’t even dream of a single partner when they thrived having multiples.
Not to mention it was near impossible for one person to take on an omega’s heat successfully.
Logan needed them and it was up to me to manage my own anxiety.
I’d always worried I wasn’t enough for one person, but now I would have to prove otherwise even though introducing more into the picture seemed like a recipe for disaster.
“I’m gonna go ahead and not believe you.” Logan climbed onto my lap, straddling carefully so she could look down at me. “You are way too up in your head. What part are you struggling with? Is it too much for me to be with Yelena?”
I shook my head. “No, it’s…”
When I trailed off, she poked my chest. “Talk to me. We always talk. Whatever it is, we can figure it out.”
“I don’t mind you with Yelena,” I said honestly. “You trust her and I can be content with that, even if I’m not there yet.”
“Maybe you should spend more time with her. Just the two of you. Things are moving so fast, and I want you to be comfortable, but I don’t know how to help with that.
” Logan tucked closer, her fingers cupping my cheek.
“What do you need from me? ’Cause I’ll tell you until I’m blue in the face that I love you a frankly ridiculous amount, and if I have any say in it, you’re stuck with me until the end of time. ”
I couldn’t help but smile. She’d been sweet and loving to me since the moment we’d met and she’d never stopped. I knew I had to make room for others to be in her life, and I would. I had with Seth, and even though I was jealous he’d gotten to bond her before me, I was making my peace with it.
“I’m more than happy to be stuck with you. I told you I’m yours as long as you want me, so the only way I’m ever leaving is if you decide you’re done with me.”
“Never gonna happen.” Logan kissed me soundly, coaxing my purr to life and threading her fingers into my hair.
“I think you’re right in that I should spend some time with Yelena. If she’s going to be sticking around too, it’s better for me to get comfortable with her as soon as possible.”
“That sounds fair.”
“Honestly, it seems silly to be worried about my feelings at all when the situation is as high-stakes as it is.”
Logan shook her head vehemently. “You’re my partner, my support in all of this.
Hecate made it very clear that we all needed to stand together.
We can’t do that if you’re uncomfortable with the team assembling.
I don’t know what you need from anyone, but if you want to be friends with them, be lovers to them, or simply a brother-in-arms, all of that is okay with me.
I have to keep moving forward, but there’s no fucking way I’m leaving you in the dust while I do it. ”
My brave omega. She was taking so many things in stride.
She’d done the same when she learned Seth and I were shifters, so I shouldn’t have expected anything else from her.
A multitude of things had changed since we’d met, but she was still Logan, still the bright and beautiful woman who had saved me. Whatever she needed I would give her.
Logan claimed my mouth again. I growled softly, flipping her so she was pressed to the bed where I could grind slowly between her spread thighs.
Fate had given me such a treasure and I was going to keep her forever.
I’d thought I’d known what love was when I’d bonded Rachel and connected with her on a soul level, but with Logan it was all different.
Even without a bond we knew what the other was thinking. I still wanted it, though.
I stripped her down, shedding my own clothing in quick succession. She was spread out beneath me like a goddess. A halo of brown strands, dark eyes already beginning to glow with power. I kissed my way down her body and back up, pausing to lap at her slick before venturing back to her mouth.
Logan’s body yielded to mine as I fucked in slowly. Each ferocious squeeze of her pussy around me stilled my movements briefly.
The omega whine she unleashed had every hair on my body standing on end, desire pounding through me like a kettledrum. Holy shit. She had always made the most delicious whines and whimpers, but this was on another level.
“ Caden . Fuck me,” she demanded, canting her hips to draw me further in.
There was no denying a request like that.
I drove in hard, choking off her next sound and triggering a rush of jasmine-scented slick.
Logan took every thrust and came apart in my arms with a burst of power that took my breath away and seared into my skin.
I was going to grow to crave that burn. No matter how much it might hurt, I would never be able to stop touching her.
“Take me,” Logan whispered, tipping her head back to expose her throat. “Bond me.”
I craved her down to the marrow of my bones. My fangs descended, teasing her skin while she shuddered and squirmed beneath me.
A beep at the door alerted us to its opening and Haru slipped inside the suite.
Caden, Yelena needs you in the library.
Logan whimpered.
Soon , I promised her. I couldn’t bond her and then sprint out the door, so that particular pleasure would have to be put on pause for the moment. With a sigh, I kissed her again and drew out of her slick heat, turning to Haru. “I’m allowed out?”
For this, yes , Haru replied. I have to escort you.
Being confined to the suite was far from my ideal, especially when Logan was able to come and go as she pleased, and Seth did the same with Haru at his side regularly. I jumped at the opportunity for a short change of scenery.
Haru and I took the elevator down to the library, where Yelena was waiting for me.
“So prompt.” She smirked at me, crooking her fingers to draw me over.
“What do you need help with?” I asked, glancing briefly behind me to see Haru disappear again.
“A couple of things, actually. Another one of our former witch residents replied, but considering the last one, I thought it might be prudent for the two of us to vet her before we put her in contact with Logan. And after that, we need to start setting up some of the plans Logan had to keep everyone calm and comfortable. Tensions are growing by the minute and if we can’t let them out, we need to get inside prepared as quickly as possible. ”
“Fair. Who are we talking to today?”
“Heather Chambers. She stayed with us for a few days about a decade ago. I don’t recall her being an enjoyable woman, but too many of the witches are ignoring us or have made themselves completely unreachable, so we’re taking what we can get at this point.
” Yelena turned toward the librarian. “Margaret, can you place the call, please?”
“Of course, mistress.”
Yelena took a seat in front of the screen, Margaret and me flanking each side of her.
The moment Heather’s face appeared, the world dropped out from under my feet.
She stared at me with enormous blue eyes, looking exactly as I remembered her.
Hair like fire cascaded past her waist, sharp features highlighted with makeup reminiscent of the ’60s styles.
Panic cascaded through me in a wave I couldn’t hope to stand against.
She’s alive.
The screen went black and Yelena fussed with the keyboard. “Did we lose our connection? What happened?”
I swallowed hard. A million thoughts and emotions clogged my throat, my mind spinning, unable to make sense of what I’d seen.
She was supposed to be dead .
I felt her die, felt the bond snap. How was she alive?
The panic dug in harder. If the bond wasn’t broken, was it still there? Could she reopen it? Could she connect to Logan through me if I bonded her too?
Rachel had been a wedge between Seth and me for so long.
It seemed a cruel trick of fate for us to have mended things only for her to appear again.
It had to have been fate’s involvement. She obviously didn't want me to find her ever again, and who knew what she would be doing right now to make sure I never did again.
She’s. Alive.
“That wasn’t Heather,” I choked out.
Yelena turned to me, scrutinizing. “Of course it was. I recognize her.”
The world warped around me, reality losing its cohesiveness. I shook my hand, my heart beating a mile a minute. I dug my knuckles into my chest muscles, half-convinced I was a moment away from having a heart attack. “That wasn’t…”
Yelena's sharp gold gaze narrowed. “Margaret, would you please excuse us? Clear the library on your way out.”
The librarian bustled away to do as she was told. As soon as the doors closed and we were enveloped in silence, Yelena stood and pushed me down until I sat on the floor. “Panther, you look like you've seen a ghost.”
“I think—I think I did.”
"Who was that woman to you if not Heather Chambers?”
“Her name used to be Rachel.”
Yelena stared at me for a long moment. “I'm going to need you to elaborate. Who is Rachel?”
“My…” It took me a few tries to actually form the words. “ My mate .”
